I have read up on the throttle cable replacement, but whats with the rough engagement? Its similar to popping into gear or something. Craig |

Alex, sometimes it's really hard to push the throttle forward. I have to ease it forward and it revs as if it's in neutral and then it pops into gear or engages the prop is a better way to describe it very abruptly. Like someone releasing the clutch all of a sudden. Does that help? |

Can you disconnect the the shift cable on the drive end and test to see if it still happens? This way you can determine if the drive or the cable is the issue. It kind of sounds to me like the drive itself is restricting the shift. |

Are the revs increasing before the drive engages, if you know what i mean? The drive should go into gear and then the revs increase as you put the throttle forward... |

That's how I read it as well. And on second thought if your revs are comming up to high the drive will not want to engage. Perhaps the throttle cable is too tight. |

Like someone releasing the clutch all of a sudden. Does that help? The "clutch" is normally fairly sudden, but you don't notice it if the RPMs are low. If your throttle control is stiff coming out of neutral, then it sounds like your Shift Cable needs replacement. This is common as the drive end is exposed to a harsh environment. There is an active thread going on this week about shift cable replacement: http://www.smwebhead.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14642 If your cables are new and it is easy to move the throttle control, then it would sound like a cable was assembled into a wrong hole at the shifter end...allowing the throttle to move before the shift movement is complete. ps: I can see from your other posts that you have a 1996 200 Horizon DXL with Volvo Penta. May I suggest that you edit your profile to include this information + engine size/model and your boating location. (for example, mine is a 2000 Horizon 240 with VP 5.7GS /SX drive). Then we will see that information on all your posts. |

What model of drive is this? Edit: I just realized this question was asked above. |

Know what you mean. It revs then engages, not the other way around. Note, it does not always do this. Also, I find it very weird that the cable is so still to move forward from neutral. Once engaged, smooth. |

Also, I find it very weird that the cable is so still to move forward from neutral. Once engaged, smooth. Should always engage, and then Rev - that's the way the throttle lever is set up. If it doesn't, it's going to be a cable or adjustment issue... Cables don't last forever so it may be worth getting them changed, if you're unaware how old they may be. |
