Post subject:  Installing Racor filter in H180 OB

I'm hoping to have a boat-mounted Racor spin-on filter installed on my 2015 H180 OB sometime this summer. I'm going to have my dealer do it because I don't like messing with gas lines, but I'd like to learn about placement options before talking to them. I've read conflicting info about the plastic bowl version of the Racor filter. Some say it can't be mounted in an enclosed space PERIOD, while others say it can't be in an enclosed space for inboards and I/Os only.

I'd prefer to have it concealed, if possible for my outboard.

Does it have to be mounted out in the open on a wall of my engine well? (shown here)

Or can it be mounted to the engine well wall inside the starboard seat compartment? (shown below on a similar boat) Maybe it would be too hard to reach the filter under there. Unfortunately, I can't check it now because my boat is far away.

Please understand, I'm not looking to break any rules or be unsafe. Just trying to limit the amount of ugly stuff I have to look at.

Thanks.

My understanding is that the Racor with the plastic bowl cannot be used in the engine compartment of an inboard/outboard or inboard. They make an all metal version that can be used in said engine compartment.

No such restriction on an outboard powered boat.

But common sense would suggest that you might not want a breakable fuel filter in any enclosed space that has an ignition source. An ignition source could be a battery or battery switch or trim motor or solenoids, although all of those things are present in our I/O engine compartments and are somewhat ignition protected.

I would not put the filter in the engine well...that's hideous. I would put it down below. If your worried about it, you can always use the all metal version, and just change the fuel filter once per year like we do with the I/O's.

I agree with Ray, but one more point....
I tried the Racor with the metal bowl and what I found was that the bowl is very difficult to remove from the filter. I used it once and just went back to the Sierra 10 micron filters I have always used. The Racor is a great filter and the bowl will hold more water, but boy is it ever a pain to change. The filter comes off the mount, its getting the bowl off the old filter that is a nuisance....
