I am planning on buying and installing a Four Winns bow scuff plate. They are telling me with a discount they will give it to me for $125. Does that sound like a fair price? How hard are they to install and how do you get to the nuts to remove the bow eye, through the ski locker?

Thanks,
Josh

Glad you asked because I'm also interested in this - looked to me at the boat show in Austin last week that the scuff plates were integral with the U-bolt and the whole assembly was epoxy sealed to the gelcoat. Think it's worth $100+? I'd rather spend that $100 on boat buckles and LED's for the trailer, but my priorities may be all backwards. :)

Houston, you have to do both  .

I can only assume the plate being considered is similar to the one factory installed on my '05. It's a very thick, well-made plate with the U-bolt welded to it on the outside and penetrating the hull on the inside. The whole plate is then 4200'd or 5200'd to the hull (not sure which). Of the plates I've looked at on other brands (including Cobalt), this one is by FAR the most over-built, so yes, if a stainless steel plate can possibly be worth $100, this one is.

On mine, access is through the anchor locker.

I too looked into getting a scuff plate. I’m fairly sure the FW web site said it was an upgrade but a recent question of the dealer said it was not available for the 190?

What do I want? Travel cover, LED light re/re, pre-paid gas card.

On a side note…Houston…what lake is that in your moonscape picture?

I called my dealer yesterday and they told me they hade one in stock for my 2007 190. I am pretty sure on the Four Winns web site that it says the bow scuff plates are available for all 05+ Horizons. I would double check with your dealer or possibly call a different one. I am planning on picking mine up on Saturday and installing it. I will let you know if I have any problems.

My photo? That's Canyon Lake north of San Antonio!

Josh, which lake is your photo? Looks awesome and great shot of your boat. :D

The lake in my pic is San Vicente Reservoir, Lakeside, CA. It is one of two small lakes in San Diego county that you can ski in.

I installed the bow scuff plate this past weekend. Four Winns does make a SS scuff plate for the 190. The install was easy, just some fiberglass in my arm and had to clean out the old silicone. I think it made a big difference in the appearance of the boat.

Get that 'glass out of your arm. I had a stray thread get into my knuckle last year. It got red, swollen, and tender and stayed that way for months. I'm still not sure it's totally gone.

I actually ordered my boat without the scuff plate. All the scuff plate seemed to do on my old 260 was chew up the rollers on the trailer. :(

I'm with you...my bow is all scuffed up above and below the plate anyway. It came with it so I don't mind. But I'd spend money on LEDs or something first if it was my choice. But to each their own.

I think for that $$ I'd be more inclined to get the Keel protector. Has anyone installed one, Is it worth it?

If you beach your boat - it's a great investment. If you don't beach your boat, I don't think it does much good.

For any interested, San Vicente was closed last year for the dam to be raised. It will double the capacity of the lake, improve the access (which was pretty perilous) and make the ramp bigger. There was a 100 boat limit previously, which will likely increase also....
