Post subject:  pully belts

Hello fello captains, I have a 1995 omc 5.8 just noticed my alternator belt is glazed and has a crack, i decided to replace it should i replace it with the oem belt which is a full flat smooth on the inner part of the belt or one from auto zone that is rimmed with ridges on the inside?? would they be the same or whats the difference?? marine or auto?? please advice anyone..thnx in advance :D

You don't necessarily need to buy OEM, but you should always match the type and size. If the pulley's aren't grooved, you don't want to use a grooved belt. Inner & outer widths are important. Sometimes it's just easier to spend the money for OEM.

Automotive V-belts are fine, but I always ask if they have more than one quality level, then pick the best one (like a good Dayton belt). Also, I always have spare belts on board.

Buy the highest quality level available and the warranty. Second use a wire brush and some smooth sand paper and make sure that their is no rust or debey in the pulley so that the new belts are not damaged. It seems that boat motor pulleys always get buildup.

thnx for the advice fellas, the belt I got is from the same 351 ford engine for a car as my boat just grooved inside or rigged same size and width...thx again
