Ok so I dump in at the Lake and the boat fires up warms up and I go to drop the hammer and its chugging and sputtering. It won't get up On plane, it chugs and revs up and down and bogs down. I pulled her out at the lake drove to the local marina and had them change out the water fuel filter. I just bought the boat this year and haven't changed the fuel filter when I probably should have. The previous owner only use the boat once in the last three years

So they pulled the old one off and there was a little bit of debris but didn't seem to have any water in it. Slapped the fresh one on drove back to the lake dropped it and started it up and I have the same problem.

The boat will rev in Idle no problem Just in drive it bogs way down and barely will go over a few mile an hour.

Fuel pump??

Stranded on vacation.
Thanks for thoughts

Yep, and you can thank that government mandated pi$$water, E10, for ruining part of your vacation. You might be able to get away with replacing just the high-pressure pump.

Thanks and sound about right! Been through two tanks of gas and down she goes! Lol. Wife is not thrilled! Haha.

Any idea what a marina is gonna hit me for to replace the fuel pump? Ballpark?

They'll get you for at least a $1,000. B.O.A.T. Break Out Another Thousand.

I did mine myself (last season) for $650 (parts only) after searching the Internet.

Don't forget the anti siphon valve on the gas tank. If this corrodes/freezes up the engine will get enough fuel to start and rev in neutral but will not plane out the boat. My boat had this issue when I first got it 14 years ago. Been fine ever since it was replaced.

Is that easy to check? I would guess not probably.
But when I take it to the marina back home I'll mention it along with the fuel pump.

Thanks

I'm not sure a boat that old has that expensive of pumps. Is the GLI carbureted? My 97 5.7 Gi was throttle body.

Fuel injected.

My buddy has exact same boat and said he got the pump for about $180 and was able to swap it out himself. We will see if I have that kinda luck.

I know it's a different fuel pump system than the newer VP ones that are failing. My low pressure pump failed and the entire repair was only around $400. It was on the front of the engine. High pressure pump is in a module on the rear of the engine.

This is why you want to start with just the high-pressure pump first (which is usually the problem). With labor, you should be able to get it replace for $350 to $400. I went through two of them when our yacht club switched to government mandated gas (which lasted less than a year due to the uproar).

I guess it really does depend on if your VP is carborated or injected (which would determine what fuel pump you have). I could not replace just the high pressure or low pressure sides on mine.

If it's injected, was it making a whining sound before failing? That's the telltale sigh an injected engine's fuel pump is on the brink of failure. I would try what LouC said and swap out the anti-siphon valve and replace the fuel line from the tank to the pump while you're at it. The line could be collapsing when the pump starts sucking more fuel when you increase the throttle.

If it's injected, I've seen them on eBay for $850.

I have the newer pump and mine was 650 new and changed myself.....yours should be cheaper and better to be honest....u can change it yourself if so inclined.

YouTube has everything on it to guide u thru the way.....I've changed the boat fuel pump and regulator system, truck axles, hubs and cv joints on 4wd, door window motor, u joints, radiator and water pump off of youtube videos. Forget the mechanic fees unless ungodly complicated.

Thanks everyone for info.

I didn't notice any whining noise, but then again I was a tad freaked out that this thing was even happening.

I'll probably have pump, line, and anti siphon valve all replaced to be safe.

Maybe an oil change too since it sat for three years.

Does the boat still have 3 year old gas in it? I'd start there. Get rid of it! Even if stabilized its not good now!
