OK, I'm sitting here thinking about my new boat and wondering how fast it might go. I'm looking for true GPS speed on a good day with a light load (maybe 2 people and 1/2 tank gas).

The boat is a 2008 200SS, 5.7 Gi Volvo 300 HP, SX drive, with the standard stainless prop. I know the Captains Call isn't supposed to make any difference, but believe me, it will be open just in case!

What do you think? Anyone have this exact package?

My vote is you'll show 56mph on GPS, but the speedo will show 60+.

FYI- that is a sweet setup... 300hp in a 20 foot boat is unreal!

You could re-prop with a speed prop (higher pitch) - and probably get knockin on 60+.

What does the stock come with? A 19?

I can't remember what the stock prop is... I have all that stuff at home and I'm at my office now.

I was thinking it would go faster than that, since I'm reading in here in other threads about guys doing 55 - 56 in H240 and H250's - well, you indicate you touch mid 50's... and your boat is 4 feet longer than mine, with what, another 20 HP? Are these indicated speeds, as opposed to GPS verified? Anyway, I'd be happy wiht 55+, because that is pretty fast on the water, but let's face it, 60 would be pretty cool...

According to four winns.com it shows 55-58. http://www.fourwinns.net/fastfacts/fast ... 00H_SS.pdf

Mine is listed at 52-55 but with a gps, light load and little chop I've found I can hit 58 so maybe you can hit 60. And that's fast!

While everyone seems to be in search of the "magic 60," I've never understood why. On water, 50 is pretty danged fast - more than fast enough to result in tragedy if anything unexpected happens.

My H240 has the 5.7 GXi dp... and when I took delivery of the boat, it easily touched mid 50's on the speedo without being maxed out.

I didn't check top speed or push is very hard since the motor is brand spankin' new... Post break in, I would expect a 55-58 on the speedo and low-mid 50's on GPS.

I rarely see a speedo that underestimates the speed as clocked by GPS.

Heck - 300hp on a 20 foot boat... when propped right -- you should break 60. I had a 19.5'' with a 5.0gi/SX combo (250hp)... propped it with a 21 stainless - and she easily did 57 on the speedo. It was a chaparral... different hull, but same concept.

Anytime you get 50+ on a boat -- especially a bowrider -- you are cruising!

Just curious, which propset was that? The stock set on the 5.7GXi/DP is F5, with a published top speed in the 240 at 48-51. The performance ratings published by FW usually seem to be pretty accurate. Of course you could prop up to F6's.

Sorry - standard propset.

I do know that the boat (on the speedo) had no issues getting over 50...

FW estimates are very conservative

Post subject:  Re: Top Speed

In most cases, I agree. For some reason the top speed specs have been right on with every one I've seen, and the specs didn't include dual batteries, full tanks, etc. That may just be the particular ones I've driven, though.

I've speculated with some other 240 owners that the 240 with 5.7GXi/DP is borderline on the standard prop, meaning that it might be as well or better off with F6's instead of the standard F5's. To the point where a couple of people were willing to buy an F6 set and do some "scientific" analysis if they could just find a good set cheap. To my knowledge that hasn't happened yet.

Being a new buyer, you might see if your dealer would allow you to try one of each and see what you think. I'd be curious about the difference in hole shot (which personally I find much more important than top speed, but that's me).

I would guess 60+. I can get up to 55 mph on the speedo and 49-50 on my gps with my '06 H210/270hp.

I do agree that everything over 50 is hair-on-fire fast. I know there are lots of boats that go faster, but I don't see much point for what I want the boat for. I realise I could likely exchange the prop with the dealer, for a faster one, but I think I agree with Mike. I'd rather give up a few mph on the top and get better performance out of the hole. I'll have lots of times when I have 7-8 people in the boat, and more often that, we'll be skiing. I think the shorter prop is going to suit me better all things considered.

60 would be pretty cool though....
