I have a 2005 H230 with 105 hours on it. Many times I have a hard time getting it into reverse. This is a pain when I am docking or need to maneuver between forward and reverse. It has a 5.7 liter Volvo. Has any had this problem? Thanks.

Almost certainly needs a new shift cable assuming yours is original. They're only good for about 7 years. You'll want a Teleflex 17' TFExtreme cable, #CC63317.

Do you have a similar issue when moving the shifter back and forth when the boat is off?

If so I agree with the last post.

Have either of you replaced this cable yourself?

I know I did on my '04 268, wasn't too bad. Can't recall if I did on my '04 225. Just ordered it for my '08 240, set to arrive Wednesday. I'll have it in before the weekend.

Yes I have replaced them on 2 Volvo powered boats.

I found the hardest part of the job for me was routing the cable through the boat.

It's a bit of a PIA to get the cable into the back of the drive. The higher you have the drive the more of a pain it will be.

All in all, a pretty simple job.

The teleflex extreme feels really smooth once installed.

Check both ends of the cable first to make sure the cable ends and the housing ends are secure. On my 268 the housing attach screw at the throttle quadrant had come loose causing hard shifting and eventually it stayed in gear when the housing became disconnected.

Hopefully Friday or Saturday. I took a quick look at it over the weekend, only concern is access to the backside of the shifter. I've got an access panel below the shifter so it should be ok, may be a bit tight. Access to where it's routed between the shifter and the stern of the boat looks good.

I've got a threaded coupling nut on order, should make the install that much easier. Just connect the new to the old near the shifter and slide it through.

I did something similar with a piece of aluminum tubing that I tapped threads in each end. It worked pretty well on my 268. The only issue is where the cable goes around a bend. Be careful that you don't have any bends that may cause you to bend the new shift cable.

Wasn't to terribly hard to do - worst part is getting access to the shifter. I have a 6" access panel beneath it but also had to remove the shifter to gain full access to take the old cable out (there are two screws holding the cable in place - impossible to get to if you don't uninstall the shifter, you can see them by moving it forward once the shift handle is removed and push the assembly forward). By far the worst part of the entire job was that and also loosening up the pad the shifter is mounted on - you'll need access to the shifter from down below - more than the access hole gave me. I'd say it's a good 2 hour project - most of that is getting access to the backside of the shifter itself.

I plan on fixing this issue soon, I'm just not sure if it's the cable or the shifter itself. It goes into forward with no problem. When I squeeze the button and try to go in reverse the shifter just feels locked up. The local FW dealer wants $700 to change the cable. I think I can do it myself.

You should be able to disconnect the shift cable at the throttle/shifter quadrant, and operate the shifter to check for binding. If the shifter is OK, then you might reconnect the cable to the shifter and then disconnect the back end of the shift cable at the outdrive. This should isolate where the binding issue is. The parts catalog at www.Fourwinns.com should have the part numbers for the shift cable and the throttle quadrant. Look also for the part number that is part of the part's name. This is usually a Teleflex or other brand's part number. This can be used to help identify the parts you need. Your Four Winns dealer should be able to get these for you. Otherwise, you can get these under a Teleflex or other part number from retailers such as West Marine, or online at ebay, amazon, etc. Shift cables should be in the $50-100 range.

The Four Winns Parts catalog shows "041-0298 CABLE, CONTROL 17' CC17217". The "041-0298" is the Four Winns part number. The "CC17217" identifies the cable manufacturer's part number and the cable end connection style and size. "CC172" identifies that both cable ends are a male 3/16 fine thread (or 10-32). The 17 at the end of this number is the cable length measured in feet. The shift cable is 17 feet, and the engine throttle cable is 16 feet.

If the throttle quadrant is bad, repalcements may be in the $250-350 range.

Hope this helps.
