Can anyone tell me how to remove the shifter? I have access to the back of it. It I am unsure of which bolts to remove. Also is front side all one piece or is there a cover that gets removed? It seems pretty tight and I don't want to break the plastic.

Going off memory from year, you should have to remove one bolt from each of the four corners. The black plastic trim piece just snaps on.

I got the shifter off and routed the cable. I didn't know I had to pull the outdrive to change it. I guess I will let a mechanic finish.

100% do NOT have to remove drive.

Where are you with the install? We can walk you through this.

I have the shifter put back together. The shift cable is ready to be put to the outdrive. The existing cable goes into a hose at the back of the engine. That hose is bolted to the outdrive. I took the cover off the outdrive and I can see the end of the cable. I don't see how to get the new cable in that hose and mounted in the outdrive.

Disconnect the cable from the drive / shift linkage which is under the plastic cap at the back of the drive.

On the starboard side of the drive look for where the cable exits the out drive. You will see a stainless clip that is locking the outer casing of the cable in place. Loosen the nut and slide the clip back to free the cable.

The cable runs next to the bellows and up into the transom and through the black tube. Once the cable is free from the drive, pull the cable through the tube into the boat.

Reverse the process to install the new cable.
