Does anyone have any experience in re-powering a 1999 Horizon 170 outboard? The Johnson 115 2-stroke is rated 318 lbs. and all the possible 2-stroke replacements seem to be around 400 lbs. I'm just looking for advice from anyone who may have already dealt with this issue. What would be the optimum choice to replace this engine with a new engine?
Motor is 1999 Johnson 115 HP J115PLEE 20" shaft

Also, I found this calculation for max horsepower? Is it valid?
stern width * length * 2 -90 = horsepower
7 * 17 * 2 - 90 = 148

Another question... what would be the impact of going to a 25" shaft?

I'm not real sure about the 170 H, but my 180 H is rated for up to 150 hp. I would think that would open up some options for you.
