Post subject:  Cup Holders - need to drain

I am tired of my cup holders filling up with water and other liquids, so I am thinking about drilling a small 1/4" hole in each one and letting the liquid flow down to the bilge. Anyone think this is crazy or have any other opinion on this idear?

Thanks

No, not crazy. You may want to see if you can put a nipple and a piece of plastic tubing to help direct the water.

The dealer lost one of my cup holders on my 288 Vista. The Admiral found a Beckson (same it appears as the ones FW uses) at West Marine. It's the model with 4 holes in the bottom. I have one with holes, one without.

I'm planning on drilling a hole or two in the arm rest compartment at the helm. It fills with water as well and has no drain.

Don't.

Unless you can wiggle a rubber tube from the bottom of the cup holder to a area you know drains to the bilge don't do it, you're just inviting possible rot or electrical problems later on. On ours we got the cup holders to pull out of the hole so we can clean them later on.

Perhaps it is karma or something, but I actually went to drill the holes this past weekend, but the batteries on my cordless drill were dead, so now I am glad I didn't do it. But, these cup holders do get nasty.

and...are a pain in the arse to clean when you can't remove them!

Go ahead and drill them. Unless you leave your boat out with no cover in a rain storm for 2 weeks straight, it will not put that much water in your bilge.
Who would do that anyway??

If you want to spice it up a bit, go for stainless cupholders. In Colors too.

I checked several of ours before drilling, to make sure that they drained in a "normal" place, where water is already expected to go, and it turned out fine. I drilled four equally spaced 1/4 holes. Our 230 had plastic cup holders -- do the '06 stainless cup holders have holes pre-drilled?

Don't know about the 06' cupholders. But the Stainless ones I posted do have holes pre-drilled. My 268 has plastic cupholders and are already pre-drilled from the factory.

My dealer said absolutely do not drill any holes in the cup holders. Reason being water can get between the hull and flotation foam and cause problems if put up wet over the winter in freezing temperatures.

I have holes in all 9 of my BEER holders and have never had a problem.
