The throttle lever tends to gradually slow down as I am cruising on the boat -- I posted this quesiton elsewhere -- but never got a really clear answer on where to adjust the tension in the shift lever ---

engine is 5.7Gi -- DP --- but that shouldn't make a difference -- just need a verey detailed description of where to make the adjustment inside the shift lever cover ---

Have you checked your Volvo maint. book that hopefully came with your boat? It's in there.

sorry I do not see that in the manual I have that came with the 2003 -- which is labeled an "operators manual" on the top === from Volvo Penta

The VP website has copies of the operator manuals on line (plus maintenence schedule, service parts part numbers). Adjustment of the friction brake is covered in the "controls" section of the manual. (Page 32 of the '04 manual, in case it's not in the '03 manual).

Dale, remove the cover and you should see a phillips head screw (gold in color) that you can tighten to adjust the friction of the shift lever. The screw has a rather large flat head recessed into the side of the shift body.

Mine just snaps down. There are no screws holding it. I do have the double shifter. I'll look at the single shifter in the Freedom after dinner

Took the cover off the shifter arm. There are two holes that appear to be access holes for some screws. Looks to me like the one is for the friction adjustment.

I know this post is way old, but I had this issue with my new boat. I brought it back the same week I got it to have them address this. The dealer was trying to tell me at first that it was set this way for safety. RIGHT! anyway, I had them adjust the tension and after you remove the plastic trim piece on the shifter there is a metal plate behind it. There are access holes for phillips head screw and I believe it is the one on the bottom right side of the plate as you look at it. I am much happier now as I can set the throttle and maintain my speed.
