Changed the engine oil and drive fluid for the first time last night.
The oil filter was so tight, the gasket tore off the filter! Even had to resort to the old screwdriver through it for removal. It bent the screwdriver and tore 1" slots in the filter before the thing would move.

Does Mercruiser have the filter installed on the remote mount before they ship it? Who the heck puts these things on so tight?

They probably didn't oil the seal before fitting the filter; rubber compressed onto clean aluminium, steel or paint and kept at at high temperature for many hours bonds pretty well!

I had the same problem when I changed my oil right after buying the boat. I had to use the old screw driver throught the filter trick as well. I am hoping it wasn't the first oil change, but who knows as the previous owner seems to have been an idiot as he did get the boat repoed.

Same problem first time I did it. Second time wasn't nearly as bad.
