I happened to see a thread over at boatered.com concerning a Volvo SX that has a crack in the upper gear housing where the upper bolts to the pivot housing. Apparently there is a small opening that is supposed to let water drain out of that area, and in some cases it is possible for it to get clogged. So if I was winterizing one of these, I'd at least pull back the drive a fraction of an inch to see if any water drains, if not actually remove it to check the bellows/u-joints/gimble.

I believe it is a 2004 drive on a trailer kept boat, there is some corrosion around some edges, but otherwise looked OK. I wonder if there was some casting flash that kept that area from draining, or something else clogged it to the point that it held water. My old OMC Cobra has 3 plugs you have to remove on the pivot housing to drain water, some years not much comes out, but some years more does. I always rod out the holes a little to make sure it drains. If I had a Volvo I'd remove the drive after winterizing to make sure that area drained and make sure that the hole is open.
