i changed the oil in my boat for the first time myself. bought the pump pumped out everything i could even measured out what i pulled and pulled just about 6 quarts counting the filter. so i then put the filter on fill her up (5.0 GL) manual i'm reading from says 6 quarts or 1.6 gallons. so i put 1.6 gallons in (had 2 gallons so just over 1-1/2). go to check the level of the oil and this is what i see! now the boat still might not be sitting quite right but should be dang close and i have yet to fire it up but would think the filter would have already taken up it's oil it needs correct?

the green lines in the image show the "safe" zone the yellow line shows my level after filling.

i really hope she's just not level and reading like this. otherwise if it's correct cause i know i put the right amount in this could very well have been my low oil pressure problem (beeping at very low rpm or idle).

Now that you have put in the correct amount of oil, start your engine. To be safe, remove your dipstick. Watch your oil pressure guage, observe the engine. Let the engine warm. Watch your oil pressure guage, observe the engine. Shut the engine down. Let your engine cool. Reinsert your dipstick and check the level of your oil. Adjust accordingly. You state the boat is level, if so minute increments of degree while the boat is trailered should not matter when measuring oil level.

To me the dip stick looks dry. I'm I seeing that right? Assuming you don't have 6 quarts of oil on the floor of your bilge, your dip stick tube may not have been installed correctly, or you may have the wrong dip stick. It wouldn't be the first time either of those happened, although it's odd.

You're assuming the amount that was in there was the correct amount. Did you check the dipstick before removing the oil?

What's the engine manual say is appropriate for it?

According to Seloc, the 2000 5.0GL is 6qts. with filter.

You pulled out 6 qts, you put 6 qts back in it, and that's what the manual says should be in it; right? If there's no oil in the bilge, I say just run the engine for about 30 sec to verify oil press and fill the filter. After that re-check it. It's not nuclear science. The goesouts = goesins ... everybody happy.Coulda been a buble or pressure in the sump during filling, coulda been oil in the dipstick tube from pumping. Trust the math!

Well, yeah, but if it were me I'd want the dip stick & tube to be right, if it isn't already. I'd want to have the ability to check oil level through the season.

Of course, I only meant it is probably some inexplicable oddity waiting for the first turn of the key. If you run it for a bit, and oil goes gurgling out the dipstick tube = problem. Nobody would disagree with you 230Mike, except that Mercruiser is better

first off my appologies for any confussion i'm a new boat owner and learning quick thanks to most on this site!

in the picture there is no fluid on the dipstick.

i did check the oil before changing it, and it was in the "safe" zone prior to the oil change. (between the 2 green lines)

i ran the motor tonight then checked it and i'm still over the safe zone. i'm about mid way between the far right green line and the yellow line now after running it a few times. i did put 6 quarts in 1.5+ gallons.

i was the one who was also having oil presure problems. this was the first fire up for the season. mainly i changed the oil to get the correct oil in it and what i beleive amount (even tho over safe zone) i have no oil pressure problems while running it on the hose.

i did however come across a problem with overheating. i shut down the motor a few times then restarted, after 20 seconds or so the temp would go up into the red, the alarm would sound and i'd shut it off.

then i replaced the impeller (old one said JOHNSON on it). the old one's rubber fins were quite a bit softer than the new one. once the new one was in and i fired it up she idled beautifully for 7 minutes or so. shut it down and fired it up multiple times with no problems.

one thing i did notice while revinging the motor though. while in idle the oil presure was just bellow 3/4 once i began to rev the motor my presure would rise with the amount of throtle i gave it, would this be normal? just looked like if i gave it to much the presure would go into high.

i appreciate everyones input and patience with me!

Disagree away! I'll never learn anything if nobody ever disagrees with me :D . And, I love Merc. I just love Volvo more  .

It's normal for oil pressure to vary with RPM's. You aren't used to seeing that because in your car, your idiot light and/or "gauge" don't show anything except "some pressure" or "no pressure." The one in your boat comes closer to showing you the actual oil pressure.

re oil pressure varying with RPM; once the engine is spinning fast enough so the oil pump generates sufficient oil flow such that there is enough pressure to overcome the pressure relief valve, the oil pressure should be pretty constant at any given oil temperature. The PRV is often integral with the oil pump and is a spring loaded plunger. Any excess oil flow either finds its way to the sump or back into the feed side of the pump. At idle, the oil pump very often cannot produce enough oil flow to reach the PRV set pressure, so the oil pressure is lower and will vary ( increase as RPM increase) up to the point when the PRV pressure is reached. When the engine is cold, the running pressure tends to be higher, especially at idle (viscosity).

It's pretty spectacular when an oil fiter splits or the seal is displaced when a PRV fails in the closed position ( and not nice for the engine bearings or your wallet!) . Thankfully, as they age the springs tend to get weaker.

Low oil level tends to give overheating, it's ofter under estimated how much of the engine cooling is done by the oil.

I called MERCRUISER when replacing our oil.. Seems that I had the same problem where I overfilled. Mercruiser said that I should check the level on the water and to GO BY THE DIPSTICK and not by the engine capacity .. I thought it was ODD , but we only put in 4.5 quarts after draining all the oil ...

Just my .02 cents !!!!
