Post subject: | Store outdrive Up or Down? |
Did search to see what the majority think. I've heard that storing it Up causes D/S boot to take a "set" & can crack when down & in use. I've been storeing my old boat down & have done it W/new one. One of the reason's I'm gonna put the transom mounted trim switch on. What do the more seasoned boaters think about this subject? Any ,All comments welcomed! I should've been more specific. I was inquiring as how people store when on the trailer sitting in between runs and or long term storage. I know the dealers always have them up, but I think that's because it's easier for them & they don't have to pay for the damage that MIGHT be caused by storing up? Thanks for all the replies. |

Always down when stored, or in the slip. Only time it should be up is when at anchor in shallow water, or trailering. |

Down for winter storage on the trailer. Up in season when on the lift, to keep the outdrive high and dry. |

Up except in winter storage. Leaving it up while parked on the trailer is one less opportunity to forget to raise it and drag my skeg. |

Down, it's the only way to get it in my garage. Besides, when I raise the drive up, I put the plug in. If I forget to raise the drive, well then I'm really screwed ![]() |

Actually, I run mine all the way up, then "bump" it down so the hydraulics aren't under extreme pressure. The temp extremes we see here justify that. Stored my old boat that way for 6 years without leaks/damaged O-rings; will store the new one the same. I don't have enough clearence to run the outdirve down, and still keep the bow up, so any water accumulation may drain out of the bilge. |

i do the same as Cincy Aquaholic, I have mine up on the trailer. In the winter when it's in my garage i will put it down. I guess I would like to know which is correct also?? matt |

I'm with Walt on this one. To me, it's more important to store my boat either covered or with the bow up and drain plug out "just in case". I pull my outdrive up and then drop it down a hair. I really don't see a reason to go one way or the other for long term reliability. The way these are designed these days - you'll most likely have something else fail before you toss a seal in the hydraulics. |
