hey, dont know if maybe anyone can help. but i have a 96 four winns horizon....this weekend it died on me....while i was being pulled it just stalled out. took about 25 minutes to get back started...it would turn over and crank and die right out, any ideas? maybe carb needs cleaned, fuel filter? why would it just die while running, and then crank and turn and just stall...almost sounds like a fuel issue

its a volvo 4.3L V6

If you suspect fuel try a couple things...

1. dump what you have in your filter into a clear jar and inspect for water.
2. connect your fuel line to a jerry can of fresh fuel and see if that fixes it

ahhh...come on now.....of course the kill switch was the first thing i yelled when from the water....

It's only funny b/c I do this all the time.

Definately sounds like a fuel issue. Start with the above advice.

I recall a similar thread on another board. Turned out to be a clogged screen on the fuel pickup in the gas tank. As I recall, it's an easy fix - FW has a deck plate that allows access. Be sure to vent fumes well afterwards.

well, after talking to several others and my mechani...sounds like vapor lock....so i have to do things a little differntly,,,but i should be good to go...if this is not the problem and doesnt change, then i will have to take it in.....thanks...

I have a 5.0 carb 2007 h200 and mine did the same thing. When I was entering a no wake zone the boat all of a sudden died. I tried starting it but it took almost 10 mins to get it started. Once it started I had to keep the rev up or else it would die. I felt like it was starving for fuel. What I did was haul ass around the lake a few times and then all of a sudden it starting working again. Not sure what caused the problem but I sure hope it doesn't come back.
can you please share what you would have to do differently?

well, i was pulling boarders all day, he said with it being very hot out, and pulling like that all day, and working it so hard, it was vapor locking, couple people i talked to including the mechanic said to let it idle more often and run the blower motor...he said this can also happen when just sitting in a cove for some time and just start up and pulling someone as well, which did happen to me two other times. so just more idle time and run that blower motor...

We were also pulling wake boarders all day and didn't idle as much. I'll try that this weekend and see how that goes. Thank you very much

My two cents....
Vapor lock is a common this time of year. Some of your fuel at the pump (and in the gas tank) is still the "winter blend" with a lower vapor temperature. Whereas your "summer blend" has a higher vapor temperature (the temperature at which it flashes to vapor) Your engine compartment doesn't get much cooling flow, and the fuel in the lines gets warm while at idle, or shut down for short periods. Run at least a full tank of gas through it before getting too crazy. It never hurts to change the fuel filter, and a standard tune-up either. However, I wouldn't go replacing the screen or fuel pump until getting later into the season with the same problem as those aren't often problematic.

i had a similar problem last year with my father in law on board (he's a mechanic). we thought vapor lock as well. we tried firing it up for awhile with nothing then after 20-30 minutes it fired up again. did it again on us the following day. this time we pulled the relay switch off above the fuel pump. then while i turned it over he plugged it back in and off she went.

i put a new relay switch in and that hot rod fuel line covering stuff (silver covering stuff to keep heat out sorry can't think of the name) on the supply fuel line and we've not seen the problem since.

my mechanic also explained this to me as well about the gas winter blend and summer blend....so hopefully with the next fill up i will have more of the summer blend to go along with me...

Cleaning the screen, not replacing. I came up with this theory when I noticed the age of the boat ('96), and the relatively longer seasons in those parts. I have seen a bunch of vapor lock posts recently too, and do not object to your theory one bit. I am damn sure we are paying 'summer season' prices for 'winter season' fuel, but that's a totally different rant.
