Question to all you electrical experts....
The 12v outlet on my boat doesn't seem to work....(plug in cell phone charger, or tube inflater, that kinda stuff). Every time I try to use the thing, it just don't work...to be honest...I have rarely tried to use it, and the times I have it didn't work.

I'm heading to the marina today to check the fuses, but if it isn't the fuse...any idea where else I should look for the problem???

If it's not the fuse, the only other thing I can think of is a bad connection. It's probably the fuse, though. Cig outlets are usually only rated up to around 5 amps, and some things (like inflators) can exceed that on initial startup.

I ran into a similar issue with mine back on Memorial Day weekend. Some things would work, others would blow fuses. After some investigation, and my trusty volt meter, It turned out to be the outlet was wired in backwards. Just something to check. FYI Yellow should be Ground.
Not long after, I installed an extra with 3 plugs. I don't know how I survived those few weeks without my 12V blender, spot light, and air pump for the misses!

Mine had a 10 amp fuse & rated for that. The blower drew 11.8amps The wire is about 6" long from fuse box & probably a 12 G wire so I put in a 15 amp fuse. Haven't had a problem since.

Hey thx KSJ8....

I checked the fuse and it was a 10 amp fuse...and it was blown. I then checked blower and it also drew 11.8 amps....I followed your lead and replaced the fuse with a 15 amp fuse....I tested the blower and wires while the blower was running for a few minutes and everthing worked fine...the wires didn't seem to get hot either.....

hopefully this simple fix will do the trick!!

What's the relationship with the blower? Isn't that on it's own circuit?

Mike,

I think they might be referring to things that have been plugged into the socket; Blower = inflator perhaps?

35- 40 mph winds here today, don't think I'm tempted to go boating!

This is in reference about the AIRHEAD tow-able inflater/deflater.
Not the Bilge/Eng compartment blower

Ah, now I understand. I'd never heard an inflator referred to as a blower :) .

Graham - good choice  .

I did have a problem with the wiring on mine shortly after purchase. Although they should not have been wired together any combination of cig lighter, blower, or bilge would fry the fuse. Took back to dealer and works fine now, I think there was some cross wiring going on. Must have been a Monday.

Cross wiring? - maybe, but it was my understanding that they farm out the wiring harnesses, and the ladies merely plug the correct ends onto corresponding terminals. I'd think you'd know if they installed a completely new wiring harness. Maybe another bout of installer dyslexia.
