Nice boat....but I'm really digging that crazy square, wooden, skiff looking thing in the background!

Booked this place for over the Labour Day long weekend:
http://captainscove.com.au/

Any tips or pointers as to where to take the boat and where to avoid?
Will I need more than 120L of fuel, if we plan to simply cruise, or is 95RON fuel available?

Daz.

I know this place well, we stay in the park opposite them. Nice spot! I wish we could get away with 120L of fuel for a weekend, for us it is closer to 120L a day! Sounds like they point you to the public boat ramp in Paynesville which is pretty good and has plenty parking. If you have your own jetty then you will most likely leave your boat in overnight as it is very sheltered there. Fuel is available from Bulls Cruisers close to the ramp in Paynesville ( http://www.bullscruisers.com.au/bulls-fuel-jetty) There are also a few servo's around that will be cheaper but requires pulling the boat out.

We cruise to 90 mile beach ( take bushmans as the march flies bite like a bitch), but is is a pristine deserted beach, and check out the steamer landing on the way. We also head to Metung Hotel (http://metunghotel.com.au/) for lunch. The Silt Jetties are a world heritage site ( nice cruise but can get boring if you have kids). You can also take the river all the way up to Bairnsdale ( also rather long at 5 knots). We often grab a coffee from the restaurant on the waters edge in town and head out. You can also moor up in Paynesville and do your grocery shopping as well, saves you having to drive around!

We ski at Newlands arm or Bunga arm where it is sheltered. Both have toilets as well.

Ps Do yourself a favour and walk around Raymond Island - free boat moorings or free ferry ride if on foot. Follow the trail and look up in the trees you will see plenty koalas. Don't bother to go all the way to Loch Sport - nothing to see and in my experience mostly a bunch of drunken bogans.

If you have the time Lakes Entrance is also a nice day trip.

NOTE: The weather gets real ugly, real quick... I know this personally so check the weather before setting out. Also get a marine map of the channels especially for 90 mile beach channels and the rivers (Tambo and Nicholson) -the bait shop in Paynesville has plenty and get the waterproof one...

If the weather is bad the Buchan Caves are really cool.

Enjoy mate!!

Good to hear from you guys. Has been pretty quiet......

deafwish - meinmelb has pretty much covered the Paynesville area.
We did Raymond Island on the bikes (peddle type). Its a good way to see the island. Plenty of Koalas as mentioned. Hopefully there are still plenty......

Good tip to watch the weather. We got caught out in a storm there once and relied on the GPS to get us back to Paynesville as visibility was crap.

Should have a great time.

Don't forget to let us know how you went.

Cheers, Craig

Hi Daz. 95% not available at Paynesville on the water but there is a servo. I also run 95, just top up the mix.

A good map is the Gippsland Lakes and Boating Guide and the Gippsland Lakes Outdoor recreation guide. Available from the Melbourne Map Centre, and many other places.

If you venture into the Bunga Arm, make sure you stay centre of the bouys. Pain in the arse pushing it out

Live bands at the Metung Pub on Sundays, plenty of spots to tie up, even pull up on the beach. We stay at Metung often at The Moorings Resort. Check it out. Has it's own berths.

Tambo River is another good cruise.

You and the good lady will have a great time.

Thanks mate!
I'll trailer the boat to the closest servo and fill up with 95 there. My trailer makes this such a simple task! 8)
I have the Navionics Silver Map on my Lowrance combo unit and that allegedly has sufficient data of the Lakes to safely navigate us around.
