hello everyone.I've got an 01 horizon 180 that i'm having a problem with that is driving my dealer and I crazy. The boat will run fine all day then all of a sudden won't start. All the guages and radio will work but it will not start. The battery is fine also. When you turn the key to the right to start there is nothing. The dealer has checked the ign.switch as well as the contact in the throttle stalk and everything is ok.We love the boat but have had to be towed twice because of this.Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a starter solenoid if it is the round puck style they are famous for going bad or you could have a flat spet in the starter, if you get stuck again bypass the solenoid with a jump wire if it starts there is your problem also sometimes if there is a flat spot in the starter you can tap on it with a small hammer and they will start if that works new starter time. And check all the ground wires also make sure the starter bolts are tight . Hope this helps Gregg 8) 8)

Couple years ago, I put my '04 180 Horizon in and it would not crank. I called the dealer on the cell phone and he suggested shaking the throttle... which worked. He later repaired a bad crimp on a safety wire wich locks out the starter when in gear.

Last year I forgot to put the plug in after launching. A month and a half later, I was running into the same problem your describing. Zeph is right on, it turned out to be the currosion build up in the starter solenoid. I bought the solenoid only instead of the entier starter. New starter is in the $400 range, Solenoid is $40. Installed and works like a charm. Check out http://www.marinepowerservice.com for parts like this.

Another thing, the starter is extremely hard to get to on my 4.3L. There is no way to quickly test by jumping the solenoid, especially on the water. Speedy, try hitting the starter/solenoid with a hammer or cresent wrench, or what ever you have on board. That got me going a couple times when mine wouldn't start.

Starter....If your mechanic cant figure out the basics of the starting system I don't think I would go back.

Hi Speedy,

No answer for your problem, but thanks for the reply in my post. I am also in Knoxville and was wondering if your Dealer is the same as mine. (American Boat Center on Cogdill Rd.) They have charged me over $1,100 in Labor and $200 in parts and still can't fix my over HEATING. :? good luck and Go Vols
