My 93' 190 Horizion is making a screeching noise upon start up and low idle. It is definatley coming from the front of the motor. I thought it was just rusty pulleys, boat sits in the water all summer. I tried some belt dressing and that didn't help. I do not know how many hours are on the motor, my pops never had one installed. It's got the 5.0 OMC with a carb. Seems to go away under full throttle. I am thinking maybe the water pump is starting to go bad? Temp on the guage do not seem alarming when we are on the water.

Any ideas on how to start?

Thanks,
Ken

You could have loose belts or a bad bearing. Try tightening all the belts. If that doesn't work, start removing belts one at a time until you eliminate the noise then investigate the items being driven by that belt.
I am willing to bet that the belts just need adjustment (tighter).

P.S. If you have to remove the belts, Don't worry about killing anything if you run the boat for thirty seconds without the belt on!

Thanks for the tips, I'll check it out this weekend. Are there any good resources to download the Engine Owner's Manual? I have the basic overview manual that I downloaded from FW website.

My guess either a bad belt (but dry lube would fix this), or possibly the water pump having a seizure... When you have the belt off, check to see that you can turn the water pump over easily by hand - should be minimal drag. I suspect it will be tight to turn.

I am thinking the belts may need to be changed regardless. 15 years old and the boat still looks and performs great. I need to keep it that way.

I'm guessing loose belts also. Should be a pretty easy fix/adjustment to see if they're the problem before you start trouble shooting everything else.

If the belt(s) don't take care of it, replace the idler assembly next (if it has one). They don't last forever, either.

While you have the belts off, spin everything by hand and check for any noise/stiffness, etc. 230Mike's right about the idler (don't let it go to your head M!). I had a problem with Alt Bearings on my last truck. Just go through things one at a time. Patience above all. It's a boat... make it for relaxation, not a stress inducer!

No worries, Walt. One of these days my boat's going to have problems and I'll be here asking something like, "Does the big fat red wire go to the plus or the minus?" It's kind of an amazing phenomena how easy it is to diagnose boat problems - when it's someone else's boat that has the problems.

Four Winns got back to me and they don't have the engine owners manual. Did volva Penta or Merc buy OMC back a few years ago? They gave me contact numbers for both companies, but I am pretty sure it was Volvo Penta.

Volvo bought the sterndrive operation, but they did not sell any OMC manuals unless they were for the joint venture models that were also sold as Volvos (94-98). To get an original OMC shop manual, try a Evinrude dealer, they may be still able to order them from Bombardier (they bought OMC's assests) or try Ebay.
