Iv'e been boating for 34 years. I live in the great state of Tennessee. I'm only 1 hour from over 7 lakes and 25 minutes from 4 of those. I just bought my first boat with a volvo penta engine and its not going to good. It keeps over heating at idle speeds, but i still have little alumacraft to get on the water with. Its great to be here and i hope to learn a thing or two.

Welcome. I am guessing you are from the other end of the state. Over here in Memphis, our choices are fairly limited. We drive about 1.5+ hours to Pickwick Lake on the Tennessee River.

Howdy! Sounds like a great part of the country for a boating enthusiast. On your overheat issue, is your boat new or used? If used, sounds like it may be overdue for an impeller replacement. If that's the case, it's a pretty easy swap out, you should be ready for the water in 20 minutes or so.

Thanks for all the replies... :) I have a 2003 190 Horizon with a 5.0 L volvo penta. I can run it down the lake for 20 minutes at 35 mph then shut it down to an idle. The thermostat rises to 200 degrees and then the alarm goes off. Boy, that alarm speaker is loud. I replaced the thermostat and had the impellor and the impellor housing replaced. Then checked all the hoses. :?: whats my next step?

Thanks, pics coming soon.

Welcome aboard!

Your overheating could be plugged heads or risers!? Take your time and search out all the easy stuff first like impellers and hoses (take them off and blow them out) It could also be your water pump impeller is worn out and won't pump sufficient water at lower rpm's.
Good Luck and keep us posted. Enjoy your boat on the water and off!

What is your temp when your running 35 mph? Should be 150 or so.
Sounds like something is clogged but don't know what. Might have to start pulling stuff apart to make sure something isn't stuck where its not suppose to be.

Sorry to hear of the overheating issue. Probably the only problem as scary as no oil pressure (or standing knee deep in water 5 miles out).
Still, I regret to inform you that you have now made yourself targeted by the picture mafia. It can get rough for those that do not appease "the family".
If you have done the impellar and the thermostat already I would try the circulation pump and related plumbing next since I understand it runs fine at cruise but hot at idle after cruise.
