I guess this is more of a rant than a question... Fuel pump #4 was replaced mid summer 2017 with no issues the rest of the season. 2018 we barely used the boat at all. 2 weeks ago I heard faint whine that sounded all too familiar. The whining has slowly gotten louder and I got the boat into the dealer 1 day before the 5 year warranty expired. Thank God! The dealer told me volvo had an issue (DUH) but after replacing alot of pumps they only had a few repeaters and our boat was the only boat with this many failed pumps. The pump is water cooled right? Can a lack of water cause the pump to over heat? I would assume the dealer would have checked for that but.... I love this boat and I always thought volvo was better than mercury but next time around I dont know if I'll get a boat with a Volvo engine/drive.

What a pain! I replaced 1, that is 1 mechanical fuel pump that was 30 years old last summer, the original Carter pump on my '88 4.3 finally started leaking a bit of fuel in the yellow overflow hose to the carb. I actually have considered getting a reman old style 4.3 V6 engine when the time comes instead of new just because...I can still use a mechanical fuel pump! The new style vortec engines have no provision for the trouble free mechanical fuel pumps, alas.

I'd do some electrical checks in addition to cooling checks to make sure that bad terminals are not causing excessive heat and current draw. I think marine pumps don't last as long as auto pumps (and I've had auto pumps last longer than 20 years), the fuel pump in our '98 Jeep is original, 22 years old and counting! The reason is that auto pumps can push fuel from the fuel tank forward but marine pumps have to suck it forward, which puts more of a strain on them. Make sure you check for any restrictions on the suction side such as the anti siphon valve on the fuel tank and the fuel tank vent.

With all the work covered by the warranty I didnt actually do anything but row the boat back and forth. The dealer told me they pressure and vacuum tested everything and replaced the anti siphon valve even though it tested ok. Electrical sounds legit, I'll mention it to them but its out of my hands now. I'm averaging 1 $1000 pump a year...

The mechanical pump is about $125 and the rebuild kit for my Quadrajet 4bbl is about $60 for a good one. Why I plan to stick with a simple carb engine as long as I have boats.

This may be old news for you but the issue is the paint they used inside the pump. It degrades and clogs the inner screens in low and high pressure sides of the pump.

They're Carter pumps and neither they, volvo penta or fourwinns will comment as they know they screwed the pooch.

They say the new pumps you buy arent using same paint...its a lie! That's why it's a continual issue.

Im in same boat so to speak...this go round I'm sending mine to a guy who rebuilds them and removes the paint inside the housing. He charges 300 and replaces all bad parts and shows how he does it....was going to try myself but it's too involved for me to attempt.

Mancavemechanic and google his website and youtubes....he details and shows the issues and the fix.

I will be sending mine to him after I get back from trip...you can take yours off simple enough and get it fixed and save 700 dollars. I figure it's a no brainer as he tests and offers money back.

I see he has a 7 day turnaround or you can buy one he's already done and he will give you 75 dollar credit with your core.

I will save that information for the next time my pump fails. So probably this time next year??? This time I think I'm off the hook.
Boat is at the dealer and they called me today and told me they spoke to volvo and they are covering the cost of yet another replacement pump. The service manager told me he has info from volvo to share reguarding the repeated failures so I will update this thread when I pick up the boat. Ive heard of the paint issue and volvo assured me the new pumps which still are made by carter are made differently however they wouldnt say why they are failing...
