Post subject:  Engine alignment

So pulling the drive today on a beautiful day....first time in years no water in the bellows....<<yay>> either I finally got better at re-installing the drive or skipping the last month sitting on the water made a difference who knows. Grease looks better than it ever has.

Inserted the alignment tool and it was pretty difficult to insert the last 3-4 inches....also has a noticeable 'rough spot...or stiff spot more correct' which made me go 'hmm' eyeballing the alignment rod it looked a bit askew....got out a ruler and its a good 1/4 inch a bit less out of alignment...argh

So few questions....scale of 1-10 how much of a pain is it to adjust the alignment.

WHY would this move.....failing motor mount? no other symptoms that I am aware of.

Ill dig through the manual and other interwebs but wanted to get the opinion here as well....pics to help explain

Edit **Im a dumbass...that difference in the centering is just the steering angle being off a bit. That said it was definitely harder to insert all the way and does have a spot that's tougher to spin. (pulling it out away from the engine the gimble bearing feels fine in spins freely (but not too freely)

Dont know but I'm following this thread cuz my turn is coming. Anxious to see if it's off left vs right...I understood if it was off it would be up and down.

Waiting for replies with ya bud

I think I jumped the gun but the tightness bothers me a bit....could be as simple as a bit of surface rust on the alignment bar.

Power steering ram leaking as well which is something I **really** don't want to tackle

Keep in mind the only things that matter in alignment are the gimble housing (stationary) and engine/coupler (adjustable) measuring off the pivot housing will just confuse you. Get the tool totally cleaned up and try it with a coating of grease on the end portion that goes into the splines. Then look at the witness marks.
Your engine mounts (rubber) can sag and the engine stringers can rot (wood/glass composite). That’s what can make it change. Now I recall that Merc came out with a tool that can be used to make it easier to figure out if the engine needs to be raised or lowered. Might be with looking into...

Remember:
the gimble housing is part of the outer transom plate and this is bolted to the transom. You want the splines in the coupler, to line up with the gimble bearing so when the drive shaft passes through both, it is not pushing off center on the coupler splines as the engine rotates. So that tool, should slide in REALLY easily. There is no side to side adjustment at all, it is all about raising or lowering the engine from the front as needed. This all assumes that the transom is flat and square and the engine mount centerline is at a 90* angle to the gimble housing.

See how outboards can be so much easier? 4 bolts and its on, none of this mumbo jumbo.
You can have same issues with straight shaft inboards with shaft alignments, packing glands etc.

I know the rear mounts have no adjustment. I had similar issues. They do have play. Loosen them all jerk on the bar all around. Then tighten the rear and adjust the front.

On mine is made the difference of having to shove it in to sliding in with one finger.

Thanks for the replies....have a hard time believing the mounts/stingers are soft but who knows....if that's the case a for sale sign is going on in the spring :) Will take another look before I put the winter covering on and plan the work in the spring...debating pulling the power steering assembly out to rebuild over the winter as well...easier to get to without battery and such in the way.

I wouldn’t worry about that as of yet. It may not have been set right the last time it was done. Just try to get it as close as you can. You would know if your engine mount pads are getting soft if you see cracking in the fiberglass covering them and the lag bolts holding the engine mounts can’t be tightened (stripping). Check that first.

My steering ram is leaking too even though I can see where....i get fluid in bilge when it sits up. I can imagine getting back there to repair it....i just keep bilge cleaned and add fluid when needed.

I did read our model years had that issue.

yea its the fluid getting in the bilge that is driving me to want it fixed...would rather give it a splash of fluid seasonally but the sheen on the water when dropping the water skis in sets the wrong tone :(

I think there were some threads on the volvo I/O forum on how to repair those leaks. The main issue is access to the steering assembly.
If you are getting leaks in the water check your trim system....I had a leaky hose a long time ago, had the mechanic I was using then replace all of them.

yea its not on the water side....pretty sure its the o-ring that's available in kit form to service the unserviceable assembly...Im just lazy and not convinced of my skills in fixing it.

Post subject:  Re: Engine alignment

odd... mine only leaks when sitting up. Once I fore it up I assume the fluid heats and seals expand. Never have fluid in bilge when running.

I cant even see the ends of the ram and have never seen the source but assume it is the ram that's leaking.

I cant imagine how to get to it to make repair.

I suspect mine is a drip or two per 5 minutes....I had to add fluid on the first run and then it was about an inch down end of season...its just a tiny bit of oil mixed with water makes a huge mess. Im thinking of trying to fashion a diaper of some sort using those oi absorbing pads to put underneath as a stopgap. (if I spent as much time trying to fix it than avoiding fixing it I would probably be done by now)
