Post subject:  Draining the drive unit.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum.

I have a 2001 Horizon 190 with a 5.0GL Volvo engine.
I've had this boat for about four years.
I have been working on it and have changed the fuel filter and changed the oil and filter.
Next I want to change the oil in the drive unit, per manual I have loosen the oil dip stick and the oil level plug but can't get the oil drain plug loose, its a straight blade screw but won't loosen. Does anyone have an idea how to get this out?
Thanks for any help.

This is what I use...just make sure it’s going the correct direction.

I have the same tool but have also used a heavy screwdriver and tapped the edge of the screw with a hammer on end of the screwdriver. That is how I saw it done by the mechanic at my dealer. Just be careful to not damage the screw. Comes loose rather easy with the proper strike.

I use the biggest flat screw driver i own. You might want to order up some replacement plugs to have on hand just in case.

Go to HD or Lowes and get a giant flathead screwdriver. This flathead should be MUCH bigger than the largest screwdriver that comes in a standard 8-10 normal screwdriver set. It can double as a murder weapon. I have a Husky brand one. It has served me well.

I also use a tool like jontmiller identified.

Another tip for straight or phillips screwdrivers to reduce or prevent slipping is to use a small amount of valve grinding compound on the screwdriver tip. The gritty texture works well. Be sure to not get the compound into places you don't want it.

I know this topic is old but I thought I'd add some useful advice.
You can clamp a set of vicegrips on the handle of the screwdriver for more torque and grip.
