I've have to see a pic to believe that you have to pull the engine to replace the starter. I've done mine 3 times over the 20 or so years I have this boat and never even had to remove the exhaust manifold. I just remove 1/2 of the rear seat and the battery. I can have it out in about 20 minutes. If you really have to pull the engine to change a starter, then the designers of that boat deserve to get smaked upside the head with a 1/2" drive ratchet wrench!

christianborys, Don't mean to hi-jack your thread but I have the exact same 2000 H170 and I'm trying to fit it with a new prop. I can't get anything off the prop that's on it now. Can you tell me what diameter and pitch you're running on your boat and if it's the original prop that came on the boat.

Thanks in advance

suspect if you pull the interior out your **should** be able to access the starter....like Lou said photo worth alot.

Id be more concerned with why the starter is 'blown' after a semi sick sounding motor what else is going on (last year my sick running motor tore up the starter to save the rest of the engine....many hours and swear words later shes on the water this season but it was really touch and go for awhile. (hydrolocked the engine after it was dieseling (running on/backwards)

Listenting to the sound it made the FIRST thing I would have done, is to pull the spark plugs and crank over the engine to check for water. If so you have to find the cause and pickle the engine. Fast before the cyl walls corrode. If not then figure out how to pull the rear seat and have at it. The engine itself is a simple as a tractor. Or a 1964 Chevy II, lol.

PS just for the heck of it I went on FW's site and looked at the pix of their new bowriders with I/O engines. What horrible design if you are a mechanic. They have done their best to add "features" that make changing a starter, spark plugs, exhaust elbows or anything on the rear sides of back of the engine, impossible. I would advise anyone who wants to do their own work, or who expects service done at a reasonable price to NOT EVER buy one of these boats. The designers should be ashamed. Really ashamed. Usless "features" make the boat nearly impossible to repair, and guess what, smart buyers listen to the mechanic and buy something different next time. This company, should fire the people that allowed these designs to go into production.
This, and cat converter exhaust has spelled the end for sterndrives. There is no real advantage to them, not even cost when you factor on the extra maintenance they require.

I looked and looked hard. I got the same motor and boat just older. I changed starters. I did not take anything out or apart. I left the engine cover in even.

I admit getting it on I tied a string on it to hold it up on the solenoid. That way I could lean one arm on the motor and reach under to start the bolts.

RonJ 14.5X19 is what it came with. I got a 14.25X21 on mine. I been through the props. I got from a 17 to a 2 speed power pro. I got a 4 blade. I have explored what a 3 liter likes. 19 hit 4800 rpm the 21 4 blade was 3900. The 21 I got now is a 3 blade stainless it is 4200. I like it the best I run at cruise speed all the time.

Ok, here is how I made mine easier to service. Got rid of the big heavy to move bench seat. Replaced that with two 37" wide pontoon bench seats. These can be easily removed because they are half the width and lighter. Then the bulkheads behind the seat are retained with bolts and wing nuts. Easy to take apart. The big bulkhead that goes across behind the seats, I put two take apart hinges in the middle so it can open like a door to change the oil or pull the plugs for winterinzing. Much easier than what it was.
Now if a relative bought one of those new ones, I bet I could figure out how to make some of the molded in 'glass removable. Or I'd take it to my favorite 'glass shop in Long Island and ask the owner how he'd do it.
