https://imgur.com/a/W5KoSCSI've got a 17 footer with a volvo 3.0 inboard.
Today there's steam or smoke coming from the engine while it's running and it also smells like burning. The temp gauge is totally normal around 140-160 at 5,000 RPM, and the oil pressure seems fine, steady at 40 at 4,000 RPM.
The burning smell is almost like burning rubber. There's some muddish looking water in the engine bay that I can't get out and I'm not sure if that's what is burning.
I ran the bilge pump this morning and the water that pumped out looked like an oil slick on the lake with that rainbow coloring, so I'm wondering if some fluid was leaking and the heat inside the engine bay while the boat is running is causing the steam and burning smell.
When I started it up this morning and tried to throttle it up, it backfired and died. It restarted without any problem though. I ran it for about 30 minutes at a max of 4,000 RPM before I noticed the burning smell.
I ran it at about 3,500 RPM and with the hatch open, you can see a lot of steam or smoke. And yea, it smells like burning too.
Any idea what could be causing this?
We've recently replaced the starter, the water pump and a power steering hose.
