Having started issues, starter keeps spinning when engine cranks up, replaced the ignition switch, just ordered a new starter relay, and cap/rotor, it's a 96 4.3 2bbl mercruiser...any suggestions?...

I would pull the starter and make sure there is no rust or other obstruction causing the bendix gear to get hung up. That's the little gear that pushes outward on the starter motor shaft that engages with your flywheel (in case you didn't know, sorry if you did).

Sounds like there may be a bit of rust/corrosion on the starter motor shaft and the gear just can't disengage from the flywheel.

Yep it sounds like corrosion is preventing the starter gear from retracting but first make sure the ignition switch is actually going from the “start” to the “run” position when you release the key.

Just be careful removing the starter......dragons live down there :) (inside joke but there is a pretty well documented history of the starter bolts seizing up)

Ahh yes I remember that story & your ingenious solution for the evil bolt!
I have changed starters 3 times since I’ve had this boat and never had a problem with the bolts. Last time I replaced my old heavy Delco direct drive unit with an Arco PMGR starter and these units are lighter smaller easier to install draw less current and crank faster. But you MUST use the right length bolts! Using bolts even a hair to long will cause the starter to shift under torque and that is what breaks starter bolts (that and hydro locks)! So any new starter you buy make sure to use the right bolts.
