Just bought a 2000 180 LS and the trim indicator is not working. Anyone else have this problem and where did they start looking? Thanks. |

Common problem, unfortunately. Seems to be the most common weakness in VP drives. Do a search on this board for Volvo trim sender and you'll get all the info you can stand, and more. |

I agree! The trim sender on my 2000 H260 is bad and I am planning on replacing it over the winter. more than likely the plastic casing has cracked and water has screwed up the sending unit. |

My trim indicator recently stopped working as well. Upon further inspection, I noticed that when I turn my wheel all the way left (moving the outdrive as far as it will go left), I can see (in the opening on the right side of the outdrive) the wire cut right in half. Does anyone know of a method I can use to try to patch this split wire and make it water proof enough to buy some time before I have to replace it. I am guessing that replacing the wire would not be a fun job. As always, I appreciate it!!! |

My guess is the wiring is already corroded. Best to replace. |

Are the wires on a new unit "loose" so that they could be protected by a piece of shrink tubing before installation, or is there something preventing one from doing that? |

Finally have this working. (Sort of) After swapping the trim sender, then removing it due to interference with the gimble ring, I realized that my trim sender was not the problem and I could set it read 10-12 ohms with drive down. Under the dash, the vehicle harness connects to a Marine Cluster Isolation Unit (MCIC). This apparenty was a VDO fix for eratic readings all over the dash. Something went wrong in the MCIC so I by-passed it for the trim sender only and now my gauge works. Only weird thing is the range of the gauge on the dash is only about 30 degrees of travel of the outdrive. Does this sound familiar to anyone??? For now, I just set it so at beach range, the dial is at 3/4 up. At least I have an indication when I want to make sure I don't damage the prop. We'll see how it goes in the spring. Thanks for everyone's feedback. |

The range of the gauge being only ca. 30 deg. of the outdrive travel is normal. Unless the drive is fitted with the electronic trim limiter (in which case the sender has 3 wires, not 2), VP SX/ DPS drives do not have a trailer or beach limit. the one trim control button adjusts it over the complete range. The gauge is more to allow you to finely adjust the outdrive position in the normal operating range, rather than telling you it's fully up ( the change in sound of the trim pump, or the sound of the UJs in agony if the engine is running tells you that!). Re the wires, unfortunately the plug for the transom is moulded onto the wires which prevents heat shrink tubing being put on them for protection. Graham |

Great to hear that is fully functional. I will re-set it to the 10 ohms in the down position and wait till spring to get used to it. Thanks. |
