I plan to replace the thin stiping on my 2000 Horizon and was just looking for some tips on products people have used to clean off the old residue and techniques for making a straight line..... Around the house I would use Goof Off to remove residue then rubbing alchohol to clean before applying. I don't want to hurt the gel coat so any comments would be appreciated. Thanks. |

A heat gun does magic on old decals, but you have to be very careful with it so as not to discolor the gel coat. |

warm them with a heat gun and peel away, goof off works very well to remove the glue that does not come off and it will not hurt the gel. applying the new striping is kind of an art in itself. believe it or not it is actually easier to do larger sections at once. When I do them I find the spot where I want to stripe and then stick on about 3 inches of the stripe, stand back off the boat a ways, peel the backing off the entire length then walk back to the boat letting the vinyl adhere as i get closer, always keep tension on it also, if you let it slack it will not go on smoothly. If you make a mistake gently pull it back off, it will come. If you do it in small sections there is a lot better chance of putting them on all wavy. I have been lucky enough to be at the Four Winns plans and watch them put the graphics on, mostly women and they make it look very simple. They can do a 20 foot boat start to finish in about 15-20 minutes. |

Thanks for the tips. Striping should be delivered tomorrowso I'll try to do this Saturday with good daylight. Any issue with using rubbing alchohol to remove the goof off ? |

Alcohol should be ok, you could test a less visable area first to be certain. Of course you could also use hull cleaner to remove the goof off and any wax before applying the striping. |

When installing the new stripping, soak everything down with soapy water first, and keep it wet until you are happy with the placement. This will allow you to move the stripes around a bit, and easier to press out air pockets. It's a tip the guy who replaced my decals told me. |

this might qualify for its own thread, but where do you get older boat striping? I need to fix my striping, however I cannot seem to find the original striping. Does anyone have any insight? |

In Detroit, Skipper Buds in Harrison Township had my stiping in stock for $0.70 per foot. They mailed it to me with a stamp so no shipping cost either. Best bet would be to call Four winns with your hull number and let them tell you the part number to order. Mine was a 2000. Not sure if 1989 will be an issue or not. Burt Lake Marina also had mine in stock by the foot. Hope this helps. |

Look at another very recent post addressing boat-wraps. The example they had was a little, well, gay. However, there is no limit to the colors and graphics choices possible. |

When I replaced some of my striping I ran some painters masking tape along the edge of the original stripe before I removed it. That made making the same line with the new striping pretty easy. |
