Post subject:  Where did you mount your GPS?

I'm moving my smaller boat to a larger lake this winter, with some pretty stumpy areas. I am in the market for a GPS/Plotter (not a hand held). I'm looking at a combo GPS/fishfinder because they are about the same price and why not have another depth gauge and water temp. I am looking at the Hummingbird 383c. Question is where has everyone else mounted theirs?

That's where I'd put it too, if possible.

Check around.... I thought someone here did a mod to install a GPS in the area to the left of the wheel, where the iPod cable and 12V socket is.

That was me. I put it in the cubby on the left side of the wheel, and relocated the cubby around the corner to the side. I'm very happy with it, but I realise you don't have the same dash that I do. Not sure where you're going to put it, but I think you are on the right track thinking you need it. For me, location isn't as important as for others. My wheel does impede my view a little. I don't watch it constantly though, I use it in unfamiliar waters to identify problem areas (shoals, shallow spots, etc) and then I simply stay away from those areas. It's worked beautifully so far. 84 hours on the boat and the prop and skeg are as new. The whole unit and installation costs should still cost you less than a prop. And, it's really neat having it in the boat all the time too.... you just never know when you're going to want to know your altitude above sea level!

FWIW - I went with the Lowrance 5200 only because it fit almost perfectly in the hole I had for it. I would have liked a garmin, as they seem a little nicer, but they don't make on that would fit. I'm very happy with the lowrance. I mounted an external antenna. It's opposite the SIRIUS antenna. Same location, just on the other side of the boat. It looks fine.

Good luck.

I mounted mine in the cup holder to the right of the instruments... Works great and real easy to read.

Made up a round wooden base the same diameter as the inside of the cup, attached the Eagle GPS Combo to the base, put it on the cup holder and then screwed through the base of the cup holder into the wood. A 1/2" hole on the side for the cables to go through and the job's done! Been in for 2 seasons now and still rock solid.

After initial frustration at not finding anywhere suitable, I did the same and it works real well (except now I have to hold my beer all day!)

I am going to use a ram mount and mount it where I have the arrow or to the gunwale.

That's the same basic mount (but with a suction cup) I used on my handheld. It's good to go.
