So say you are motoring along at 20mph. There is now some impending doom ahead. Do you :

1. Move throttle from forward to neutral then to reverse -- or--
2. Go from forward to full reverse with no pause at neutral

I would think #2. I'm just not sure and would not want to damage transmission. That might be a secondary concern depending how big the impending doom is.
The "safe boater class" does not start until 08.

you will be suprized how fast the boat will slow from 20. No need to slam it in R. changing gears really is related to engine speed. So let the engine get to idle then shift away. Now that wave coming over the stern maybe no fun.

At 20 mph, you should be able to avoid most situations with out sudden inputs that may bust something. But if it was life or death.. I' d slam if I had to. It's only a boat. and can be replaced/fixed.

IMHO... anyone else? Interested in other opinions

Tough call. If you're going around 20 and do either 1 or 2 your drive is going to be shot to ____. I would much rather keep a keen eye out for the danger and turn around it instead. If it's life or death I would probably do either 1 or 2 in a panic and then tow the boat to the dealer for some service work.

Only do what you are talking about if avoidance is impossible. Going from a fast forward speed into reverse will almost always cause your engine to ingest water resulting in a hydrolock and most often a replacement engine.

Coming off plane from a high speedabruptly (WOT or near to idleveryquickly) can also cause water ingestion.

Either of the above can/will void any warranty on your motor

As to avoiding the hazard, your boats response to a change in direction will be much quicker than coming off plane or trying to reverse the engine.

There are no gears in the outdrive like a transmisssion. If anything, the outdrive is much more compareable to a rear-end with a clutch.
