| Post subject: | Oil Capacity? |
Every where I read I get different info. My local dealer told me 7qts. Mantenance manual says 6 qts. I put in 5 and the dipstick reads full. What have you guys been putting in? IOh I have a 5.0GXI. |

You need to start it, then re-check. Filter & lines are still empty. |

As with all engines I always fill the filter before installing it to avoid any dry start up. |

I seem to recall that the boats hold between 5 and 6 quarts depending how much oil you get sucked out during your change. If you are minimum 5 - you are probably good. Like Brent said - just fire it up and run it good to check level. Also make sure your boat is level and not on a slope of any sort. |

Good call Brent. I never did run it after I changed the oil. It was the last thing I did before putting it away for the season. |

I measure what I took out, and make sure the dip stick reads full when I put about the same back in (my filter is upside down btw). |

I have your same engine and use 6. Make sure to heat it up when ur gonna take it out. |

I was looking close at my engine the other day. The plastic cover on top of the flame arrestor has a chart that says what oils for what purpose, and lists how much it takes too. The 5.0L Volvo says 5qts. |

You never get all the oil out of the bottom of the engine especially if you are using a suction machine. That's why it's important to monitor what you take out and then strat by replacing that amount, let the engine idle, then recheck and top off as required. I made this mistake last summer and had to suck back out 2 litres of fresh oil out of my big block that holds 9 Qts. The recommended oil capacity is if the engine was brand new and or completely drained. |

I do the same thing, I have a plastic gallon container that I have marked off in qts. and I start with the engine at the full mark, engine warmed up, then suck out the oil. I measure what came out and put back in the same amount (done when winterizing). BTW, for those who like to change the auto trans fluid on their trucks and SUVs, if you have an old school domestic auto trans with no drain plug, the above procedure works great! I use the same vaccum pump to suck the fluid out of the pan of my Jeep's TorqueFlite and I can remove the pan with no mess! Not like the auto trans shampoo mess of the old days. I measure what comes out and put in the same amount, I always start with it at the correct level so I know that's what needs to go back in. |

I had an apparent problem with my engine when I first had my boat. Engine alarm would sound repeatedly everytime we came off plane. Check all fluids, etc., restart the engine, it would reset and all seemed fine. Multiple trips back to the dealer before they finally figured it out. Turns out there had been a technical service bulletin on this for my model (2002 Horizon 220). The recommended oil replacement capacity was wrong. The oil in the engine was slightly overfilled. When the engine was run at high rpm or WOT, the action of the camshaft would cause frothing on the surface of the oil. The air in the oil would cause a momentary drop in the oil pressure reading once the rpms were dropped. After removing the excess oil, and insuring correct fill from then on, we've never had a problem. |
