Hi all.

I am brand new to the site, found it while looking for information on a new to me boat.

I have a 1986(?) horizon 190, it has the mcm 140 Merc in it.

Trying to just get power to it to raise the outdrive up. I have attempted to charge the battery but it appears that it is to dead, tried connecting the battery charger to the cables but all I get is a click. I am assuming that there is not enough juice that way.

Also it appears that the starter sol. is corroded a lot, the screw that the main pos. cable connects to is loose in the solenoid to the point thta the screw can be pushed in all the way. Is this a complete failure of the part or does it get the connection from contact with the outside rim so to speak of the solenoid?

I have check all the fuses on the panel and none of them are blown, also the main breaker isnt tripped in the engine compartment.

Also one other question, should I be able to turn the steering wheel and turn the outdrive without it running? Or is it some sort of power steering? I am used to my old bayliner capri where it turned no matter what and this one doesnt move..

Any help here is greatly appreciated.

The wheel and outdrive should turn just like the Capri.
Sounds like you at least need a battery.

Sounds like you need a battery and starter solenoid (yes...total failure or soon will be) to begin with. Then clean EVERY connection (including the fuses and their connections) and go from there. The steering should turn (no matter if it is power assist or not) but, if it were me I'd start with getting it running (or at least to a point where you can troubleshoot it more) then work on the steering (most likely the easier problem).
