Post subject:  Horizon 190 Advice

I am in the hunt for a used Horizon 190 (1999 or newer) and would appreciate any advice on what to look for...any known problems or areas of concerns? Looking at a 2000 model year this week with very low hours. This boat has the 5.0 Litre (V8) which I assume is a good thing. Is there any reason I wouldn't want the V8? Also looking at a 1999 with the 4.3 (V6). The engine was rebuilt last year which concerns me. Seems wierd that the engine would need to be rebuilt after 10 years. (my last boat was a 1982 MasterCraft..between my brother and I we put over 700 hours on the engine with no issues).

Why a Horizon 190: I have 4 young boys age 10,7,5,3 that are very active. I'm thinking the H190 is the right size to introduce them to skiing, wakeboarding, etc.. while also serving as a nice pleasure boat for the few times a year that the adults want to go boat riding or hang out at the sandbar. We will be skiing on Lake Bellaire and boating the chain of lakes connected to Torch lake and Elk Lake in Northern Michigan

Thanks for your advice.

The 190 is a great boat, I'm sure you'll like it. Only thing aside from the obvbious, to look out for are VDO instrument clusters, they have a history of failure leading to the need for a $500+ cluster upgrade. I'd also encourage you to stay away from carborated engines in favor of fuel injection - I understand that there's a little better reliability, especially on the volvoo's - this is debatable however, and just my personal preference. Oh yeah, if you get a trailer too, look for signs of maintenance, regular hubs greasing, tires no older than 5 years, etc.
