| Post subject: | Exhaust Manifold Drain Plugs |
Can anyone describe what the brass drain plug for the exhaust manifold looks like? Does it have a hole running through it? What is the point of plugging the manifold if it has a hole in it? I am attaching a pic - this seems to go into a mating brass fitting on the aft side of the exhaust manifolds on both sides:

Yes - I see the plug in the exploded view, but i guess I don't understand if the hole has a function or not? Let's say I have a friend who might have cross threaded that plug and he wants to just put a brass fitting from the local hardware store in there in order to enjoy the lake this weekend. Would he be an idiot? |

THe hole is in the plug so that you can drain the manifolds without completely removing the plug. Similar to the drain plug in an automotive radiator. Installing a regular brass plug works just fine with no ill effects. |

OK - thanks for the tip. No where have I found any service manual or user advice that said anything about opening up the drain plug - every reference I found on winterizing indicates "remove the plug to drain". |

From the photo, it looks like that hole will be open to the outside all the time. Shouldn't there be another piece in there that normall blanks off that hole and is turned to expose it? I can't see there being any harm in using a conventional brass ( or bronze) plug instead of it (that's what I have on my 2004 engine). When I drain mine, I don't bother taking out the plugs; I take out the adapters that they screw into, it's easier to clean out any rust debris that way. Graham |

I also pull mine all the way out anyway. Helps get any debri out. |
