rookie mistake. pics to prove it.

actually been boating for awhile now, but this is the first year with my 2006 21horizon. so went to put boat on our boat lift lined it up about where we would lined up out yamaha boat. not thinking that the weight distribution is much in the four winns boat. so everyone jumps off an the there goes the boat slides right off the lift scratching it down both sides. any suggestions other than having to match a gelcoat to get the fourwinns blue? i put about 6 layers of starbrite heavy rubbing compound got nothing. which i was very suprised the scratches are very light (can barley feel them with finger nail) any suggestions? where can i get this four winns blue?

It happens. Nothin' a little gel coat can't fix!

take it to a pro though.... you'll be glad you did.

That is a bummer. Not to be negative, but that is probably gonna mean regelling the blue on both sides. I have a way smaller scratch than that and with wet dry paper rubed right thru the gel. Check this out

don't hate me for pointing it out but....your boat isn't on the trailer right either.

That eyelet for the strap needs to go between those two rollers. Basically so the stainless steel plate is resting on the rollers.

I'm only pointing it out cause it took me several tries to get it right myself.

so you think this is too big for me to tackle myself? have a feeling that this will be pricey since it is a pretty big scratch on both sided. oh thanks for pointing that out about the rollers! i woulda probably never realized.

You could do it yourself, but the blending is an art.

Get ahold of Ryan@winnisquam - give him your HIN number and I bet they can look up the matching gel.

thanks i just shot him an e-mail. also read your post, i would like to see those pics. did you buy a sprayer? or is this something you can rent from hardware store. looks like the color is midnight blue but i would much rather him match it for me.

I guess it all depends on how invisible you want the repair. Like I stated in the other post, the guy that looked at mine and has been doing marine fiberglass work for 20 years, told me with my scratch the best way to make the repair is with matching paint. Gel will not blend enough to give an invisible repair. He also did tell me that no matter where you get gel from it must be tinted to match. Nothing matches right out of the can.

I think your looking at a 1500-2000.00 repair

I have heard that too, mine is pretty oxidized so I probably will try buffing it out this summer, but if it still looks bad I will have the hull painted from the rubrail down (red). No more colored gelcoats for me...next boat will be white with nothing more than a simple boot stripe......

It is very tough to blend paint well especially the object is more than few years old.
As some of you know my boat had a contact with earth in the end of last season and Winnisquam repaired the damage over the winter. It came out “perfect”… It was a small area in the bottom of hull and will be under the water. However, they took time to do right and I can not tell any sign of damage or repair work….. I will vote for bring to a professional….. my 2c.

Here are pics of my scratch and the near rub thru of the gel. It is not very thick.

The scratch you could just catch it with your fingernail. I thought sure it would come out.

I know fiberglass and gel coats are MUCH different than cars, but in my experience in the car business, if you can catch a finger nail on it, its going to need to be painted. Buffing just wont get you there 95% of the time.

Sorry to hear about what happened...its a crappy way to get your season kicked off.

yeah that is how mine is, can barley feel with finger nail but it is going ot have to be re-done i guess. think insurance would cover anything like this? 2 grand to shell out is def not how i wanted to start my summer! :evil:
