Post subject:  Please help...newbie with electrical issue on 195 Horizon

Well....I have done it...

I bought a 195 Horizon last year and it ran good. I then had some interior work done and also had it winterized. I went out to fire it up for the first time today and I am in a "no start" situation. It will crank, but will not fire (not even on ether).

I have deduced that I am not getting 12V at the coil and have no idea how this thing is wired. Does anyone have a schematic for a Horizon 195 cuddy? What should I check first, how can I test.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated....Everything I do seems to backfire on me and I am sick of it.

Thanks a million

You may not get 12V at the coil - depends if the points are open or closed. Sounds like an ignition problem as it won't fire on ether either. First things first:

Pull the coil lead from the dist cap, hold or porition it a quarter inch from the manifold bolt or good earth point and crank the engine over. We are looking for a spark jumping from the end of the coil lead to ground and it should make a cracking sound as it arcs. If you get this, then your coil and primary ignition is probably OK, and the problem is in the dist cap, plug leads or plugs themselves.

If not, then replace your points and condensor and try again.

If not, maybe your coil is bad (not a common problem).

To get a manual or schematics, got to the Four Winns web site, click on Owners Manuals, select the year and model and download it. The schematics are usually at the back of this manual.

Hope this helps or at least gives you some ideas....

I know you are further down the road in the troubleshooting process, but did you check your kill switch/lanyard to be sure?

I dont have a kill lanyard on this boat. It is a 1985 and it didn't have one.

Thanks to all for the help. I will be looking at it today. This is the first time it will be started this year.

THanks again.

There is an online manual for 1986 and previous models at the fw website. No wiring schematics that I can find, but here's the troubleshooting recommendations for cranks but doesn't turn over:

-lack of fuel
-clogged anti-siphon valve or fuel tank pick up.
-clogged fuel filter.
-plugged fuel line or defective pump.
-carb float valve stuck.
-damp spark plugs, wires or distrib cap.
-loose plug or coil wires.
-water in fuel supply.

Sounds like a lot, but much can be eliminated by smelling for fuel at the carb - if you have fuel, then start looking at electrical. You might also call the folks that winterized it for you, to see if they did anything odd like disconnecting a fuel line that needs to be un-done.

He said it won't starte on ether so it's not fuel problem. Sounds like He's not getting spark. Did you pull out a plug to see if there is spark at a plug? Check any breakers/Fuses?

I have a ignition tester, but it rained all day today (of course) so I wasn't able to test it. I have ordered a new cap, rotor, points, wires and plugs so I can give it a major tune up anyway. I took a plug out last night and it looked pretty fouled, plus it was crankin' really slow, I am charging the battery now so hopefully it will have a good charge tomorrow night. We will see what she does.

Thanks for the help / suggestions.

Yep, plugs will definately foul up without any spark..! I definately think you have the right strategy for now - do the points, condensor (don't forget the condensor - a couple of buck item that is often overlooked, yet has a limited life of only a few years before it dries out), cap etc., charge the battery up and see what happens!

Thanx Aussie....

I also went and got the schematic of the boat. Thanks for the that tip. DUH.

I have all the stuff needed, now I need a couple of nice days to work on it.

Will keep you posted....

Make sure when you reconnected the battery that everything got connected

Well,

I have changed plugs and such. I changed the condensor, but when it comes to the points, I am a bit worried. I have no clue how to change points (mechanically, it is easy, one screw, but the adjusting, I am clueless). I have toyed with switching to electronic ignition, but I dont wamt to spend the $$$.

Interesting things I found.

- I do get 12 V at the points with the points open.
- I do not get any spark even at the coild wire.

I figure, if I am getting 12V, this is the last stop for 12V before the coil.

Not sure where to go from here. Ideas?

I have found something interesting. I have found a black wire on the starter side and have been unable to trace where it goes or shoudl be attached. I have looked at the schematic and it seems to be a ground, but the ground coming from the wiring harness is attached.

Very odd. Maybe tomorrow, I will take a pic and post.

CASE CLOSED.

Wound up to be the points. I changed the points and after setting the gap to the 22 thousandths that it called for, turned the muffs on, squirted a bit of ether and cranked her up! Started right up and idled just like last year.

I am excited again about this boat, I was a bit disconcerted for a while, but am happy again.

I wheeled out the gelcoat too, and it almost looks like a real boat again!

Anyone have a cheap stereo they want to get rid of? (donate). CD preferably!

Thanks for all the help, I will send up some pics.
