Post subject:  Low Speed Plane
I own a 2006 190 horizon 4.3 volvo penta 21" pitch ss prop. would love to hear some suggestions on how to keep the boat on plane when towing kneeboarders and tubes at a slow rate of speed. Was thinking of a hydrofoil until reading some posts about stresses to the transom. Was thinking of Smart Tabs SX until reading a post that they do not work well with horizon hull. Does anyone have the smart tabs on their 190 horizon, and if so, how do they perform for my needs. I am open to all suggestions, thank you.

I would try changing props before playing with tabs and hull.
- lower one pitch if you want to stay with 3 blades...
- 4 blades prop (I think you would like the result)
- even 5 blades (it will be little costly)
Keep eye on WOT RPM to be the range of engine spec.

I have an '02 190 with 5.0. I switched from a 3-blade alum 21"
to a 4-blade alum 19" last year for the same reason. It definitely
planes easier and holds plane at lower speeds. Just watch your RPM's
with the 19". Ideally I would like to try a 20" 4-blade if there is such a thing.

Yes there is...that's what I use (14x20) made by Michigan Wheel with the Volvo hub kit. It makes a world of difference over the stock 14.25x23 for water sports and general cruising.

Thanks for the info, I am pretty sure I will try a different prop, I am running at WOT with the 21 prop so yeah I will have to wqtch my RPMS when downsizing for sure. Any other ideas from anybody? Thanks.

I have a friend that uses a 5 blade stainless steel on his rinker with a 4.3. He said make sure you do your homework and talk to a local shop to make sure it will work and not void your warranty. Putting a five blade on his rinker did void the warranty, but it is the best thing he ever did!! He says it holds on plane better and slower than ever before. He also uses a 750# fat sac bag in the bow under the filler cushion. I dont like the fat sac i think it is too much weight in the boat. But it does help!! Hope this helps??? Drew

Just curious, but how does swapping out the prop void the warranty and was it on the entire outdrive? Is it the possibility of over revving the engine with a non-recommended prop?

He said rinker doesn,t recommend a five blade prop because it has to hard of a bite in the water and can cause premature failure on the outdrive so the dealer said it would void the warranty. Don,t know why this is just what they said!!! DREW

Mine is stock as a rock from FW and as long as I keep above about 12 knots (25kph) it planes fine in salt water. I normally tube at 30-35kph by GPS, and wakeboard at 30kph without a problem...

Something that doesn't cost a cent is
1) make sure that you are trimmed all the way down / in
2) make sure that you don't have all your weight ( passengers) at the back of the boat , but rather spread the load evenly or if necessary towards the front of the boat.
