Post subject:  Serious safety issue effecting 2005 Horizon trailers

I had a serious potential safety issue with my 2005 factory trailer using a Tiedown Engineering Brand Actuator. I am not sure but this could effect other years and other boat model trailers. This is a universal part that is used on many makes and models of trailers. I would not normally post two messages on the same issue but this is a serious one and I wanted to be sure that if you have this issue you find out about it and get it fixed.

Here is the link to the Messages I posed on this topic: http://www.smwebhead.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3656

What's happening to your tires? What brand are you using?

I just replaced all 4 Carlisle tires with Towmaster tires thanks to 2 blow-outs in less than a week. The factory Carlisle tires are not well-suited trailering, from what many people have told me. I just finished a 2000-mile trip with my new Towmaster tires with ZERO problems. Best of luck!

How long did you have them? I've just replaced all our tires for the second time --- doing it on a regular basis every two years. I've had two flats (first one with the Carlisle's), though both times were when safely at home or arriving at the marina (no highway experiences, which I want to avoid).

I heard (from this forum?) that the tires get a beating being hot, then dipped in cold water, then hot again, etc. Not sure how true it is, but it's good enough for me to just "replace 'em all" on this two year basis.

It's worth noting that both blowouts happened while making a tight 180 degree turn.....I couldn't avoid it, unfortunately. However, you can see the stress that such turns put on the tires. I'm assuming for now that they just can't take it if they are already aging.....

ps. as long as we're on tires and trailers --- keep an eye on your spare tire bracket. I posted an entry awhile ago about how mine snapped. I'm still having problems finding proper u-bolts that will fit the replacement. FourWinns never seems to have them available, and ones I've ordered elsewhere have been too long.

I bought my boat in November 2008 (brand new) and have trailered it about 7-8 times since then, usually 150 mile round-trips. 2 blow-outs within this time frame is unacceptable, thus, new Towmaster tires are now on my trailer...
