I recently purchased a 1992 Horizon 190 with the OMC 5.0 HO and OMC stern drive. I am in the process of making sure everything mechanically works. While on my first test outing with it, the trim stopped working. I got it to work again by smacking the trim pump. I assume that the brushes in the motor are going bad. I would like to replace the motor. My question is, can I just remove the motor or do I need to worry about the hydraulic fluid? This seems to be the only major (If you can call it major) problem on my boat. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

That’s it! Thanks! I have one other question though. Will removing the motor let out the hydraulic fluid? It looks like I might get away with just swapping the motor out. On a side note I am bookmarking that site. I love the parts catalog.

Not sure about the fluid loss. The only one I've delt with is the Volvo pump which has the motor on top of the reservior.

Well, I pulled the trim pump off. It really wasn’t that hard of a job. I unplugged the battery. Then I unbolted it from the back of the boat and removed the various wires making sure to mark where they went. I did not disconnect the hydraulic lines. I then unscrewed the 3 screws that hold the pump to the reservoir. I then began to carefully remove the motor. This is when I found out for sure that removing the pump motor will let hydraulic fluid out. I was being careful so I only lost a little. I quickly flipped the motor and reservoir around so that the reservoir was underneath the motor. I then removed the motor completely.

Instead of buying a new motor, I took a stab at fixing the old one. I found 3 screws held it together. I opened the motor and found the problem. One of the springs the held the brushes against the spindle was rusted and stuck. I took the spring out and cleaned the unit and spring. I reassembled the motor and pump assembly and tried it out. It works!

Now all I need to do is make sure it has the proper amount of hydraulic fluid. I have not spent the time to figure out where to fill it yet. That will be a weekend project. It does move the stern trim up and down and seems to be fine. But I want to make sure. Next time I will take a few photos so everyone can see what I am talking about.

Have the drive trimmed all the way down when you fill and check the level.
