Well.

Having never done the upholstery gig before, we decided, what the heck! What is the worst that can happen.

So, I spent 5 hrs rubbing out the gelcoat, and then we ripped all the seams on the back seats and remade them.

What do ya think? Not too bad for an 85 and $1600 bux. I have about $2200 into it so far. Runs great too.

Nevermind the duct tape on the seats...those are being replaced next week with ones from Overtons. We shall see.

I also rebuilt and re-covered the dog house, as close to stock as I could get it.

let me know what you think. I think she is getting there, and the labor for the seats was free from a neighbor. Not perfect, but good enough for my boat. :)

It's a beautiful thing. Considering how nice it's coming along, it should look like a new boat when you're done.

You should be proud of yourself!

Very nice....I re-did the entire interior in my 88 Horizon...the only original pieces are the side coaming panels, I had a shop re-make the bow cushions and bought new captains chairs and the rear seat from Overtons...they were actually pontoon boat seats...the colors matched the original colors perfectly and I just had to trim the carpted shelf in the coaming panels to make the rear benches fit (2 36" benches make the rear seat). The OE Four Winns seats were really nice...but shot from age and not being kept covered....I had a new cockpit and bow cover made to and that has kept the interior looking good....

What did you do to restore the gel coat?

Thanks all for the compliments. LouC, I would love to see pics of the interior of the 88 Horizon. I am always interested in how people re-do these older boats. I was toying with the idea of putting a single help seat in and then building a small L shaped couch on the left side instead of the back2back seat.

To restore the gelcoat, I used a product from 3M that is specifically designed for highly oxcidiized (sp) finishes. I bought a variable speed polisher / sander (not an orbital) and worked it slowly. I think that this stuff could bring back all but the worst gelcoats. I love it!

I don't have the pix up on a pic sharing site but if you go over to http://www.iboats.com and look in the boat restoration forum (do a search for my user nane there Lou C) you will find em...now I gotta get my gel coat looking as good as yours...I bought the stuff and a dual mode Makita machine (does both rotary and random orbit) but the weather here was so bad before I launched the boat (keep it on a mooring behind our house) I just ran out of time (if you wait too long to lauch all the good spots get taken). When I pull it out for its mid summer maintenance I am going to give it the full treatment....

Thanks much. I enjoy taking something that "isn't so great" and giving it new life. My new seats get here tomorrow and I am putting in a stereo today. Then the bellows get done and mechanically she will be sound. Then I might buy a 22ft FW (same year) to play with as a little more room would be nice.
