Post subject:  Temp Gauge on faria multi function-guage not working

Hello,
I hope someone can help me with an issue i just noticed. I just put the boat in the water and while I was driving to get to the dock i noticed the temp guage is not working, all the other guages are working correctly. I drove around for about 10 mins to see if the guage would move but nothing. I felt the engine and i was able to touch it and it was really warm not hot. I am assuming that it did not over heat.
I checked all the fuses and they were fine. I just not sure what to check next.
I have attached the similar guage i have in my boat

I guess the other question is, can i use the boat if the water temp is not working?
thanks
Matt

Maybe the wire simply came of the temp sender on the engine...

That's an exhaust overheat alarm sensor; I think temperature gauge senders are usually close to the thermostat housing.

Graham,
I was looking near the t stat and could not see any wires in that area. Can i assume it would be brown? that is the color of the wire on the back of the gauge??

What is anyones thought about using the boat when the gauge is not working???

If it was my boat I would use it with the temp gauge not working. But I would check the engine often! make sure all is good.
But it does sound like a wire has come loose on the engine or on the back of the gauge.

It might be on the inlet manifold; the thermostat housing is bolted to it. I can have a look on mine tomorrow.

I just checked on mine; what appears to be the temperature sensor ( hex head about 3/4", with a bolted on brown wire) is in the inlet manifold, on the starboard side near to the thrmostat. On mine, a 2004 5.7 GXi, it's about 2" ahead of the first injector, may well be in slightly a different place ona TBI or carbed motor ( probably still screwed into the inlet manifold though somewhere near the thermostat).

Boater - no problem

Graham,
Thank you so much for looking. This gives me a starting point where to look. I will check it out this weekend.
I called the dealer and they thought it could be a bad gauge of sensor or the wire came loose. I want to see if i kind find the problem before I have to bring the boat in. I also asked them about using the boat and they said just check the engine periodically as 1NiceHarley suggested which I did, and it was a great weekend.

thanks again for all your help & suggestions

Hopefully someone can tell me if the pictures i have included is infact where the Temp sensor is. I think this is it? In the pic you can see there is some black crud on the connection. Is this normal? could this be the issue for the gauge not working? should I clean this connection off. If I screw off this bolt is the senor under it? is this easy to replace and what does the sensor look like.
thanks
Matt

Yes, that looks like what I thought the sensor looked like on mine ( things have been moved about a little on mine, as it has FWC); regarding the part you can't see, the bit in the manifold, they are usually just a brass or bronze cylinder.
