Made the purchase:

2003 FW Freedom 180 with the 4.3 Volvo Penta SX

The boat has the aluminum prop that really needs to be reconditioned. I would rather just replace it with a stainless one. I believe the Horizon and Freedom's are very similiar (and there is no Freedom forum).

What (and where) do you guys recommend? Actual Volvo stainless? Another brand? Pitch?

I would like it to help in the performance if possible.

Thanks.

I went with a OEM volvo 21p SS on my H180. Compared to the Alumn OEM Volvo of the same size and pitch; Out of the hole and mid range acceleration improved but top end MPH is about the same. Very happy with it overall.

p.s. - I don't think SS makes a HUGE difference in performance on our boats. I bought mine because I ding up Alumn. in the mud every year and the SS should hold up. Would think a heavier boat with larger motor would see better results with SS vs. 135hp 2300lb.

Thanks for the info. Where did you buy it? I was going to look online to see if I could get a little savings. I can install it.

Boating buddy said mine would improve performance as the aluminium one is in rough shape and he did mention better performance out of the hole.

My 2 cents......

Assuming you have RH rotation, go with a Michigan Wheel Apollo 993045 14R21 or if it will fit a 993025 14.75x21. You'll need a hub kit also.

Check around for best prices, either should be about $250 to $290. If I knew where you were located, I could recommend a distributor in your area. For now here is one link.

Sorry, forgot to fill out my profile.

Tampa, Florida

Guess I do not know my rotation. How do I tell? Do I need the hub kit with both or just the second one and why?

Thanks again!

You will need the XHS105 hub kit with either propeller. The hub kit absorbs impact and stress caused by shifting gears and is designed to spin under significant impact to protect your lower unit.

You can call either:
Admiral C & B Propeller
6235 S Manhattan Ave
Tampa, FL 33616
813-837-9476
1-800-771-9476

Thanks for the dealers.

My buddy said changing out the prop is not that big a deal (he deals with outboards, but appears the same).

Is the hub kit fairly self explanatory too?

Calling Admiral now as they are close.

Called Admiral $340 plus $50 for the hub kit.

I am going to shop around, but if I want to do it this weekend, at least they have it in stock.

Good to know they have them in stock at least. Just search the web with those part #'s and you should find better prices, even with shipping. Sometimes distributors will match internet pricing, just to get the sale. If you did not mention it when you called, it might be worth a try.

I did! Email had referral for Cap Morgan and when I called I did nit mention your name and the price was $30 different.

Just got my old prop and it's a RH 14.25 x 23 so need a new quote

Was surpirsed at the pitch as I thought most of the 4.3 Volvo's came with a 21 pitch.

Thanks

I got mine off ebay this January for $175 shipped new in the box. Got lucky due to time of year I think as these normally sell for $300 - $350. I almost bought the MW Apollo SS prop with XHS hub the other fellow suggested. Its a good one too from what I researched. I've read here that the Volvo OEMs are best for the FW boats but I can't back that statement up personally. My local prop guy told me Solas makes the Volvo props so you might want to check out that brand along with the Michigan Wheel.

Going from alum. to SS will lower your RPM approx. by 100 due to less flex. Cupping will also make a difference too depending on the new vs the old. My engine over Revs to 5k RPM on a 21P prop so a 23P would gain me more speed I suppose. However, I need the lower pitch for water sports and just cruise a little slower.

Good luck with your decision!

I found the specs for my boat and it comes with a 23 pitch. I was shocked as I expected it to be 21.

I was wondering if I should buy a Volvo prop vs the other makers, but I can get the one today as opposed to waiting and not having it for the weekend (we are going out this weekend) so I might be stuck with that decision.
