Post subject: | Broken clasp on the windshield door...any ideas? |
Hi all... Been awhile since I've visited. Hope everyone is having a great summer. So far so good here, getting a lot of hours on the boat this year. Ran into one small issue though -- we have a minor problem with the windshield "door". One of the two plastic clasps broke. It was always kind of loose -- wished I could have tightened it, but a rivet holds it on. One half of the clasp snapped, right at the rivet. Has anyone taken the door apart? I see it has two screws on one edge. I'm hoping perhaps I can drill out the rivet and come up with a way to repair it without having to have the shop look at it, but don't want to open up a can of worms and create a worse problem. Thanks! Ernie |

Hi Ernie - My 2 cents would be to order or purchase (if they have the part in stock) from your local Four Winns parts department a new clasp. Don't try to glue, etc the old one, it will break again no matter what you use. While your at the dealer picking up the part just ask them how to replace the part. BTW are you talking about the piece that rotates to hold the window closed? Good Luck! David |

Hi there Ernie, haven't heard from you in quite awhile. You should be able to drill out the old rivet, just work carefully. It might not be clear how best to attach the new one, until the old one is off. If the frame member can be removed on that side (giving you access to the inside), then you might be able to use a small stainless bolt and Nylok nut. In that case, I'd drill out the other latch and re-fasten it the same way while you're at it. Otherwise a pop rivet might be the only way. Personally I think those rivets look cheap and intend to find a way to use the bolts if/when this time comes on my boat. |

Thanks Mike/David... think I'll go with both strategies.... yes, it's the little things that turn to "lock" the window "door" shut...... but when I get a new one, drilling it out sounds like the best strategy. As I noted earlier, it's always been loose anyway....... Ernie |
