Post subject:  Adding Ipod input
This may have been covered on this board before, but I would appreciate the help. I have a 05' 200 Horizon with the stock Clairon CD player. Is it possible to add a Ipod input cord to this unit? If so how hard is it? Is it something I could do myself or would I have to take it to a Stereo store? If anyone has any experience with this issue I would appreciate any advice you could give. Thanks.

WHICH model clarion? Some have AUX connections, some don't.

But everything works with an FM modulator. Given that the sound quality out on a boat, well, sucks, it's a bit pointless to argue against the simplicity of an FM modulator. If you can get an AUX connection that's great, but if not just use a modulator.

What model is your deck?
If it has CD changer controls, you can get a cord that charges the ipod & your deck will select playlists & tracks.
It may have RCA inputs. If so, you can get a cord @ Radio Shack that has the 3.5mm plug on one end. Your deck will have an "AUX" button or when you toggle the "source" button, it may show up on screen.

Dangit Bill! Too fast for me.

I will add personally, I'd rather replace the deck with an ipod ready one before using an FM modulator. But if you must get one, use one that plugs in-line with the antenna vs. wireless broadcast.

Eh, I've had decent luck with some of them. Of all companies, Monster's ipod modulator sucked the least. This a bit of a surprise considering the usual hype over quality condition of Monster products (and their despicable corporate behavior in general). My suggestion would be if you're going that route pick up one (or several) from a local retail big-box store with a good return policy. Try 'em, see which one sucks least and return the rest.

+1. You can replace the entire HU with a better one (than Clarion) for just about the same $'s as a decent FM crapulator. Most all new HU's have an mp3/iPod jack already built in.

I've tried the fm modulators. I use one in my car and it works ok, but it doesn't seem to work nearly as well on the boat for some reason. I would like the ease of just plugging it in. I'm not sure on the model of the Clairon unit. I think I will just try pulling it out this weekend and see if it has RCA input on the back. That sounds like that would be easy enough. I plan on replacing the unit and would like to add a couple more speakers and a amp over the winter, but I plan on boating until the end of Oct and was hoping for an easy fix to get me through till then. Thanks for the input.

As for adding speakers? Has anyone added speakers to their H200 or H2100? If you are sitting in the bow or Captain's Chairs you can hear great while up to speed, but if you are on the back bench seat you can't hear the music well. I was hoping to add a couple speakers in the back to help with this. Anyone have any experience or ideas?

I also have an 05 200 Horizon. I just bought a mini jack to rca and plugged it into the back of my XMD3 aux port and drilled a small hole to thread it back in the glove compartment. Just remove the back-rest in the bow and you should have easy access to all the wires. I bought this plug at Overtons for under $15.

Good to know. How hard was it to remove the back rest. When you flip the backrest up to get to the storage compartment behind the backrest there is access there?

I only had to remove a single screw and pull off the cushion. I don't have storage behind my seat backs in the bow.

I tried 2 different FM modulators in the boat and both sucked. As previously mentioned the monster sucked less, but still sucked.

As far as the adding speakers I added two below my bench seat. Really the only place I considered making the modifications to the boat myself (cutting holes). Here is a photo:

You mean add the ipod port? I did one on a 260. There should be a thread someone with my screen name re my stereo projects. The mp3 port was one of the easiest.
