Please tell me the amount of oil needed to refil a volvo 5.7 engine with G.M. block I believe that would be a 350 260 hp. and is the oil checked hot or cold, first notch or second on dip stick. I put 4qts in engine and 1qt in new filter, ran engine about 3-5 minutes checked oil after about 5-10 minutes and level was up to the first notch on dip stick and on the other side of dipstick it was half way between 1st notch and second notch. can some one please tell me thee propper way to check, and general amount needed for oil change.

I'm not sure about the quantity but I am sure a merc per the manual needs to be checked when the boat is resting in the water. It makes about a 1/2 quart difference on a merc.

According to my Clymer manual the 5.6 GL is 5 qts with filter and the 5.7Gi,GS,and GSi is 6 qts with filter.



How much oil did you get out?

I got a little over 5 and 1/2 qts. of oil out, this tells me it is 6 qt. cap. when completely empty. Is it normal for about a half qt. to remain in the pan. I used an electric pump that was used 2 times to drain the hot tub it has been sitting on a shelf 3 yrs. bought a short hose added hose fittings and hooked to dip stick and it worked fast. but dont know if 1/2 qt. or little less in pan is normal.
