I am searching for our first family boat. A 2007 Four Winns 190 Horizon has come available. Has a Merc 4.3 fuel injected 225hp with 18.5 hours. Stereo, Bimini, snap-in carpet, snap on bow and cockpit covers. Comes with a 3 blade stainless steel prop and a aluminum spare. Tandem axle with brakes, swing away tongue, spare tire.

Asking is $18k, - base NADA is $12,500, with the covers/bimini, trim indicator and stereo $14,570 . The trailer is an upgrade compared to most others I've seen as well as the engine. I'm seeing other listings for $16,900, $18,900, $19,500 to $21,500. So at least the asking price appears to be in range. Any thoughts?

Prior to finding this I had been looking pretty hard at a Chaparral, any comments from those that have compared the FW to the Chap as far as fit and finish? The nearest Four Winns dealer is an hour away, but I'm 'assuming' as far as engine work I can take that to any certified Merc dealer.

It appears from reading here some are not big fans of the FW swim platform. I am curious to know if anyone knows how much one runs (ballpark) from a dealer?

I'd welcome any thoughts/comments about this boat sure would be welcomed.

Steve

That's a good price for that package. Have you looked at any dealers close to you?

During my search, I found that most people's asking price is based on what they owe (payoff) on their boat loan and many times was higher than the NADA. I started asking sellers if they had the title. If they, did not negotiation on the price was going to be minimal as they did not want write a check to sell the boat and their asking prices were higher than value due to the no money down and long term loans they took.

We are at the end of the summer. Depending on where you live, boat use is going to be liter till next spring. They should be motivated to sell or will have to wait till next spring. Good luck.

KSJ08, not yet they the dealer has an 08 H190 however its the 190HP but does have a swim platform. They are asking under 20k they say. The seating isn't the sport seat setup and we've focused mostly on boats with the sport seating layout.

PDACPA, I agree about the payoff I've run into that with a couple of other boats. My initial conversation didn't cover this, but something I'll ask before we go visit. We have about a month left of boating season here, depending on how long our Indian summer lasts this year.

The listed weight of this boat is 2650# with the 225HP engine, is that enough to move this boat?

Y-Guy I have a 2003 FW Freedom 180 (Basically the same as the Horizon) with the 4.3l Volvo Penta v6. With a stainless prop (made a difference over the aluminium) I hit 42 with 8 people (1 guy 200 and 2 guys at 240 plus women and kids) and snorkling gear, 2 coolers of beer/water/soda/snacks and 32 gallons of fuel. I have to imagine the 225 hp (mine is rated at 190 hp) should have no issue.

My buddy had his 20ft Mako center console with a new Yamaha 200 Outboard and we were neck and neck at WOT (he had similar people on board).

Thanks PDACPA that's good to hear. I'd been hot on a Chap 18'3" boat with a 190HP and was convinced it could that we wanted, figured the 225 would do it but never know how some boats fare with others.

Is there brochure archive for the 2007 year? I'm not sure of any feature changes from the current model years and doesn't seem that FW provides those for downloading.

There sure is:

http://www.fourwinns.net/brochure/index.html

Hit the Brochures folder on the left and then find your year.

Update, just noticed that it only goes to 2006.

Thats odd. I just tested it with my Mac Mini. Works fine in Safari. One thing I did note is that when you click brochure and it drops down the list of years, do not hit the plus sign in front of the year you are looking at, actually click the Year itself. However, once that open, then you have to hit the "+" to see the details within the file.

The files are PDF documents (http://www.adobe.pdf) and each page is its own PDF file instead just multiple pages. Maybe it has to do with the PDF reader.

Also, it is kind of slow to react. I have to click or double click more than once sometimes to get them to open.

Hope that helps.

P.S. Firefox, IE, Safari, and Chrome on my Windows Vista machine all work.

Y-Guy...we have a 2007 Horizon 190 and love it. We opted for the aspirated 4.3 @ 190 hp and it's plenty. But next time we will go fuel injected. Also, tandem axle trailer is a plus. my 2 cents...

I was able to get the brochures, I do question why they don't just allow you download the whole thing. Their current method seems a tad bit arcane.

geoloco5150 - Thanks for the real life comment. Is there anything on your 190 you don't care for after having it a while?

My only issue with it to date has been the temp gauge not functioning. The sending unit has been replaced and it still doesn't work. Next step is to replace the thermostat then the gauge itself. But these things happen with all boats.

Overall I think FW 190 is a good starter boat. The fit and finish is good and everything seems to be layed out well. I like the hinged seats, snap in carpet, deep ski locker, finished engine compartment etc. A lot of manufactures don't pony up all this stuff standard. I think you get a lot for your money. The boat is a decent size and will fit in a standard 20 ft deep garage. Hope this helps....good luck. Here is a short video on the water. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLEyArRTPfc

Geo - did you have your windshields tinted? I was thinking of doing that myself (do it on all my cars) as it gives it a more sport look.

Yes I had them tinted last summer. Came out pretty good. I think it lowers the windshield profile a little bit.....make sure you have a good tint shop do the work. The curvature of the windows proved to be a nightmare for the window tint guy...
