What is the normal temp range for a 1999 volvo penta 5.7 four winns horizon with the stock gauge cluster, mine reads about 3/4 up the gauge. IF this is not normal can I please get some thoughts on what to check for, fresh water only. THANKS. |

I am not familiar with that gauge cluster but on most gauges the middle is 150-160 or so which is where a raw water cooled motor with the 160 stat should run...mine will run right at 160 which is in the middle of the gauge...if it's 3/4 of the way up I'd guess that's about 200 which is too hot for raw water cooling...so I'd start trouble shooting the cooling system... raw water impeller...belt...thermostat...etc |

I have the same engine in my boat. I'll check the next time I'm out. Might be a couple of weeks though, this weekend is looking like bad weather. I think your post in the engine forum stated that you are running on muffs to see your temp that high. Typically, you don't pull as much water in running on muffs compared to on the water. It's not advisable to run very long on muffs. I would take her out for a spin and see if it is a bit cooler. I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as your not at the top, but is probably worth looking at a few items like improper impeller installation, thermostat, etc. |

Hey Moe, I checked mine yesterday while out on the lake  It looks like running slow speeds, ie no wake, my temp gauge is right in the middle. When I'm up on plane, at ~3k rpm, the temp guage is slightly below middle. So I would say either you're running hot because of the muffs or you need to look into your impeller, etc. I would check on the water, then start troubleshooting if you're still high.

Thanks for the reply. I changed the impeller and ran boat on the lake saturday, temp was about 1/2 needle past half way point on gauge, every now and then it would get about one needle past half way point. Today I tested the sending unit [there are 2 on this engine, thermostat housing and intake manifold, thermostat is not connected, but intake manifold is , so I ran a jumper wire from one wire to the other on the plug, turned ign. key to acc. position and the needle on the gauge jumped real fast to the 3/4 mark and then 2 or 3 seconds later it would jump all the way past the red bar on the gauge. Is this a fault with gauge or sending unit or just normal. Thanks and hope you enjoyed your time on the water. |
