Post subject: | Chattering Beep after impeller replaced??? |
Hello, This weekeng I was out with friends and at higher speeds/rpms my boat started a chattering like beep coming from the motor. I have a 4.3 Volvo Penta GL in my 2002 180 Horizon . When I slowed to idle speed it would go away. I have seen on other posts that it may be the impeller or thermostat. The oil pressure and temp seemed to be where they have always been on the gauge right in the middle. I bought this boat this spring and have no idea when these things were last replaced. Is there a post on this sight to explain how to replace these things or is there a sight I can go to. Is this a simple job a buddy and I can do, or should I take it in to the dealer. Where is the best/cheapest place to get these parts. Thanks, Tex |

here is a thread I found viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2881&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=impeller&start=75 You can google search it. Sounds like a DIY project. I have not done it, but plan on doing it next time mine needs to be done. |

Thanks, for the reply. I was looking at it last night, looks like a I will have to take off a bracket to get to the impeller housing.. Thanks, Tex |

I will tell you on the 5.0L...its pretty easy as I did my own this past spring. |

Ok, I changed the impeller, which looked like a dog chewed it up, ran my boat in the driveway for about 30 min. everything was ok I THOUGHT. Took my boat out last weekend started on the ramp made sure all clamps on hoses had no leaks everything looked good. I idled out of the marina everything is still ok. Started to run across the lake noticed the temp going up a little then the temp got a little over 175 started hearing the chattering beep. I slowed down/lowered rpm and heard a constant beeping. When I got back to idle speed the beeping went away. Is there anything else I can look at or replace, since the impeller is new. All fluids look to be a normal levels. The boat is running a little hotter than it should, I think, everyone else temp I have read on here runs about 160. Any info you have can help. Thanks, Tex |

Dumb question but when you are running it in the driveway you are running it with water right??? |

You probably need to re-check that old impeller. If any part of any of the vanes looks like it might be missing then it is probably lodged in the cooling system somewhere and is restricting the water flow. Of course, this is assuming you correctly replaced the impeller and did not run it while "dry" at any point after installation. Did you replace the thermostat when you replaced the impeller or is it still the original? FWIW, my boat runs in the 170-175 range all the time. I realize it is a different engine and all... |

I ran in the driveway with the water hose connected. Also, when I replaced the impeller only 2 vanes were on the old impeller. Bought boat used this spring. Anyway, greased the new impeller and o-ring before replacing. I did not replace the thermostat how hard of a job is this? If the thermostat reads 175 or a little above it should be working, right? I think I did everything how I was supposed to on the impeller I would never run the motor without water to cool. Thanks all, Tex |

I thought they would be pumped out the water outlet on the outdrive. Where else would they go? Thanks, Tex |

From pet575's post above.... Quote: If any part of any of the vanes looks like it might be missing then it is probably lodged in the cooling system somewhere and is restricting the water flow.

How do you go about getting the lost vanes out of the cooling system? Is there a way to flush the cooling system out? Thanks all, Tex |

If they aren't in the pump body, they are probably in the outlet hose or the inlet side of the heat exchanger. Loose vanes are often the cause of unexplained and sometimes intermittent overheating. They are a particularly serious problem in a raw-water-cooled engine because they can get into the engines cooling passages, resulting in serious engine damage. Hopefully this is not the case for you. |

The boat is 7 years old and I don't think the impeller was changed at all, because when I broke the screws loose the red paint was still attached to the screws. Do you think I should change the thermostat anyway? Thanks, Tex |

I would imagine that the engine is raw water cooled, so there would be no heat exchanger. If your manifolds/ risers are being cooled OK, the impellor is fine. The first place to look for the bits of rubber from a disintegrated impellor would be the thermostat and thermostat housing. Not an awful lot can get past the thermostat, when it opens the gap for water to pass through is quite small. So if that small gap gets blocked, overheating is easy. Graham |
