I have a 1998 Horizon QX with a 4.3L Volvo Penta engine. Prior to this season, I had a nasty hesitation during take off. If you feather the throttle, it will get to speed, no problem. Starting had not been a problem, hot or cold. We rebuilt the Holley carb this season with a Volvo rebuilt kit for the marine application. It has seemed to get worse. The hesitation is just as bad but now during cold starts, I have to manually hold the choke closed to start. Once warm, it runs fine but still has the hesitation during take off. The starting condition is most likely the choke needing to be adjusted but the hesitation is baffling to me. My next step is take it to the dealer but if anyone has any insight prior to the cost of the dealer, please let me know.

Unfortunately, I have already replaced fuel filter/seperator. Thanks for response though!

Sounds like the carb is having issues, even though you rebuilt is it may need to be adjusted on the high and low speed circuits, sounds like your low speed circuit is lean if it stumbles, cooler engine like a rich starts, it may also be your timing, just my opinion only.

Thanks for the reply. We tried a couple things this weekend with timing etc. We did adjust the choke so that it starts good when cold. We did notice that if you look into the carb when you try to take off, there just isn't a good strong spray of gas coming from the secondaries. It just kind of dribbles out. I am also thinking that maybe the float is not adjusted correctly. Looks like we will be headed to the service man to correct the problem unless someone else has a better idea of where we should head. THank you all for your responses!
